How about the man who shot liberty valance? 1962 but it's a a reappraisal of the American myth.
That's a really neat idea! I'm going to keep that one in my back pocket and wait to see whether the class is capable of making the leap from a western set in the early 20th c to a commentary about America at mid-century. It absolutely is, but it requires students really figuring out connections. Somewhat in the same way, I've back pocketed Rear Window, which can be seen as a metaphor for McCarthyism (surveillance, paranoia) at a basic level.

Night of the Living Dead
Way out of the time frame (1945–1960), but I like the idea of using horror to get people to talk about the underlying essence.
Ok Heston.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers,
thats my vote. fun fact, the old man in the beginning of the 78 remake screaming the "end of the world" nonsense is Kevin McCarthy (no relation) star of the original.

That movie is so damned good (original, I mean), especially for my interests. The pod people could represent communists, suburban drones, brainwashed masses seduced by popular culture—just a grab bag of paranoia.

Anyone seen No Down Payment (1957) before? Never heard of it until now, but it seems kind of promising for the themes of the course.

never heard of it either, ya'd think someone would mention it, especially since David Bowie saw it on British tv in the 60s

Nudity wasn't invented until 1967 when hippies learned to take off their clothes.

Continuing on with Cassavetes, I tried to watch Faces last night but I had to shut it off after a while. I understand what he's trying to do but it was almost literally like being the only sober person in a room full of acquaintance drunks that all know each other really well.

Nope (2022) 6 months of covering my eyes during trailers is finally over! I liked it, but not as much as the first 2. The chimp stuff was my favorite part. (Theaters)

Demons 2 (1986) More of the same from Lamberto Bava and producer Dario Agento’s Demons from the previous year. This time goth-girl Sally moping around at her own birthday party has an infectious demon come through her TV set, and soon enough the entire high rise building is getting gored to bits. A couple actors form the first film are recycled into new parts. Lots of shirtless body builders too! Asia Argento is about 12 years old in this. The best character is a pretty, young pregnant wife, who was separated from her husband when all the chaos began. The main difference from the first film is the soundtrack has switched from metal to goth(ish), and features Smiths, Cult, Gene Loves Jezebel, and a great song from Love and Rockets. This might even be more action-packed than the first, if that’s possible. (SHUDDER)

The Night Evelyn Came out of the Grave (1971) A London swinger brings sexy redhead hookers home to his castle to torture and kill because they remind him of his dead slut wife. He decides to settle down and marries a blond who he brings to live in his castle with a handful of non-immediate relatives and 5 identical maids with blond perms. Some more murders occur, and it would appear that Evelyn has risen from the dead to commit them. Gratuitous nudity throught the entire movie, including giallo mainstays Erica Blanc and Marina Malfatti. The director also did the superior giallo, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times. Very good giallo, but no sympathetic characters. (SHUDDER or Midnight Pulp)

Flesh for Frankenstein aka Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein (1973) Udo Kier (Mark of the Devil, Suspiria) plays the Baron, who has made a male and female creature in hopes of creating a master race. Joe Dallesandro plays a farmhand (with a full New York accent) who sleeps with every woman he comes across. Hoping to attach a human head that is very willing to breed to his male creation, Frankenstein and his assistant seek him out, but accidentally behead his friend, who is training to be a monk and has no inclination to breed whatsoever. When Joe moves into the house because the Baroness needs him to be a full-time sex servant, he sees the head of his friend on a new body, and he wants answers. Directed by Andy Warhol pal Paul Morrissey in Italy, this features mostly Italian actors, including a pair of small children, the girl easily recognizable to Italian horror fans (Red-haired Nicoletta Elmi, who was in Deep Red as a child, Demons as an adult.) Lots of nudity and gore, the latter is often held up right to the camera, as this was originally in 3D. (SHUDDER)

Blood for Dracula aka Andy Warhol’s Dracula (1974) Director Paul Morrisey’s follow up to the previous year’s Flesh for Frankenstein features several of the same actors, and is again shot in Italy. Udo Keir is the sickliest Count Dracula you have ever seen, pale as milk, spends most of his time in a wheelchair, and colors his white hair with shoe polish. He can drink only the blood of a virgin (hilariously pronounced “whirr-gen” over and over) so he leaves Romania for Italy, as his home country’s stock has just about run dry. He and his servant are taken in as guests to a family with four daughters, one above and one below marrying age, but two who are just right. Only the two candidates have been getting it on the regular from the house servant, played by Joe Dallesandro. (Suspiria’s Stefania Casini is one of them) Non virgin blood makes poor ol’ Drac vomit profusely! Lots and lots of nudity in this one, from pretty young Italian girls who speak in broken English rather than being dubbed. Dallesandro can’t be bothered to break his Brooklyn accent as he predicts to his wealthy associates that a Socialist Revolution is coming. This one is even better than Frankenstein, and has a great gory ending. Watch it! (SHUDDER)

Lone Wolf and Cub: White Heaven and Hell (1974) The sixth and final film of the saga. Having vanquished most of the Yagyu clan, Itto and son are now plagues by supernatural spirits of the underworld who kill anyone who comes into contact with the duo, and a great, gory climax against an army of samurai on skis. I always love the aesthetic of blood splatter on snow. It’s hard not to compare to Zatoichi, as the actors are brothers and the movies come from the same production company. While the Baby Cart movies are very gory, I just don’t feel Itto’s personality, compared to Zatoichi, who’s bursting with charisma. (HBO)

Hard Rock Nightmare (1988) A rock band finds a cabin in the woods to practice in, and they and their friends get picked off by a dumb looking werewolf. The kid whose family owns the cabin killed his grandpa years before during a game of “I’m a vampire and I’m gonna get you” and it haunts him until this day. Cheap gore, one good scene of nudity, I can’t say this was very good. (SHUDDER)

Slaughterhouse Rock (1987) To cure him of his nightmares, a college student and his friends and his sexy professor go to Alcatraz where a rock star (Toni Basil) recently committed suicide and resurrected the spirit of a ruthless cannibal. Makes sense? Of course it does. DEVO does the original soundtrack on this, though I think they were intentionally, and jokingly going for a cock rock sound. I still don’t know how DEVO did a horror movie soundtrack in 1987 and it flew over my head. Some gore and nudity, not a great movie, but DEVO and Toni Basil are enough to sell it for me. (SHUDDER)

The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspiscion (1970) A married woman is blackmailed into sex by a sleazy photographer, and wants to come clean to her husband. This giallo from the director of Death Walks on High Heels and Death Walks at Midnight is light on the murder but still manages to excite. The beautiful Dagmaar Lassander is the title character, and also with Nieves Navaro and Simon Andreau. (SHUDDER)

Ricco the Mean Machine (1973) Christopher Mitchum is Ricco, fresh out of prison and set on violent revenge on the mob boss who double-crossed and killed his father. So why was this Italian gangster movie sometimes marketed as a horror movie called “The Cauldron of Death”? Perhaps because it’s gory as heck and the mob boss, who’s side gig was a soap manufacturer, would dump his victims in a boiling vat of lye. Also, a castration that would hold up to, and probably surpass any gore film of the time. Giallo Queen Barbara Bouchet and Malisa Longo supple grade-A nudity. (DVD)

Prey (2022) Very fun action sequel to Predator from the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane. I remember Amber Midthunder from Legion, she was great in that too. (HULU)

Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers (1988) It’s been five years since the events of the first film, and the killings have become local folklore. Pamela (sister of Bruce) Springsteen plays Angela, a camp counselor who has a very short temper when it comes to people who don’t have camp spirit. She kills every kid whom she thinks is a bad apple (which eventually becomes just about all of them) and tells her superiors that she “sent them home” even though she hasn’t the authority to do so. No cast or filmmakers from the original cult classic were involved in this. Gone are the charming characters and intriguing story and in its place is blood and nudity. That’s what the film needed to make it watchable, however not memorable. One of the campers barely kept her top on, and the main girl was Rene Estevez, of the Sheen clan! Decent time waster if you like slashers, however no comparison to the first. (DVD)

Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenage Wasteland (1989) Springsteen Sister and Killer Camp Counselor Angela is back, killing and stealing an identity to sneak into a poor-kid/rich-kid camping project, and knocks off the kids and adults one by one after deciding they have a bad attitude. Snobby rich girl, slutty rich girl, graffiti boy, East LA gangbanger and more make up the stereotypical kids. More nudity and gore, but again, lacks the charm of the original. Keeping the tradition a famous sibling in the SC franchise, Melanie Griffith’s sister Tracy plays the good girl (DVD)

Night of the Werewolf (1981) Paul Naschy returns as El Hombre Lobo for what, lets say the 10th time? Three beautiful anthropologists find the grave of Countess Bathory and resurrect her. They stay over at the nearby castle where Polish Nobleman/Werewolf Waldemar Daninski lives, having recently been resurrected himself. The villagers withstand a barrage of werewolf and vampire attacks, not before every girl takes their top off, and eventually the Countess decides she wants a werewolf as a pet, leading to a climactic fight reminiscent of Universal’s Frankenstein vs the Wolfman. Pretty similar to Naschy’s own Werewolf Shadow from 10 years earlier, this was a lot of fun. English dub from Spanish. (DVD)

Horror Rises From the Tomb (1973) Paul Naschy plays a dual role as a beheaded Satanist and the ancestor who finds and accidentally resurrects it a few hundred years later. The plot was nonsense, the blood and beautiful naked women were constant. Also with Helga Line. Loads of fun. (TUBI)

Los Parecidos aka The Similars (2015) A stormy night at a Mexican bus station in 1968 becomes a supernatural terror for the eight people stranded there in this homage to at least three different Twilight Zone episodes. I couldn’t possibly reveal any more without spoiling the fun. I caught this one quite by accident, and damned if I didn’t love every minute of it. In Spanish with subtitles. 2nd watch was just as good. (SHUDDER)

Subspecies III: Bloodlust (1994) Michelle is falling deeper and deeper in to full vampirism, and despite her hate for Radu it appears there’s no turning back now. She must vow loyalty to him in exchange for her sister’s safety. This was shot together with part 2, so all the primary characters return, but this seemed a step down form the second entry entertainment-wise. It had its moments, though, and there were some very good gruesome FX. Some nudity. (TUBI)

Girl Boss: Escape From Reform School (1973) 4th entry in the Sukeban (Girl Boss) franchise, starring Miki Sugimoto as a bad girl on the run, with disciples in tow. I love Miki, but despite a few good moments, this was one of the weaker Pinky movies I’ve seen. (DVD)

The Designated Victim (1973) Thomas Millan plays a man whose wife won’t divorce him or allow him to sell his business despite a lucrative offer. He meets an eccentric gentleman who proposes a “murder swap” in this giallo reworking of Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train. Light on the body count, and Katia Christine provides the nudity, and a David Bowie haircut. (DVD)

Rock ‘n’ Roll High School (1979) Roger Corman’s high school hi-jinx showcases The Ramones and features PJ Soles, Mary Woronov, Paul Bartel, Clint Howard and more. Co-written by Joe Dante. Doesn’t get much more fun than this. (TCM/cable)

The Barn (2016) Set on Halloween 1989, some teenagers who are too old for trick or treating, but still love trick or treating, accidentally awaken three demons that killed a little girl 30 years prior. Linnea Quigly has a cameo in this middle-or-the-pack retro slasher. Their heart was in it. (TUBI)

Bad Biology (2008) A young woman with an insatiable sexual appetite usually fucks her partners to death and gives birth to deformed babies about two hours after conception. A young man with a 2 foot long dick that’s alive and addicted to drugs (yes, the dick is addicted to drugs) gives prostitutes permanent orgasms. If these two meet it’s a match made in heaven! Between 1991’s Basket Case 3 and now, this is the only feature directed by Frank Henenlotter. Cheap, but loaded with gross out scenes and nudity. After this 2nd watch, I’ll probably shelf it for good. (DVD)

Class of 1999 (1990) In the near future, violent schools have robot teachers placed in classrooms to employ discipline. Problem is they are re-programmed war-bots who have a problem not killing students for minor offenses. Stacy Keach (in albino makeup) is the overseer of the project, Malcolm McDowall is the principal and Pam Grier is one of the bots. Mark L. Lester has directed a lot of good movies including grindhouse classic Class of 1984, this one is a suitable popcorn flick. (TUBI)

Class of 1999 II: The Substitute (1994) B-List martial arts star Sasha Mitchell plays the mysterious new teacher, who brutally beats and sometimes kills the students who are constantly harrassing a pretty, young teacher. She’s thankful for his help, but she has a boyfriend. When the substitute finds this out he goes on a rampage. Pretty bad movie, with some nudity, but I did like the ending, and Sasha Mitchell turned his back on an explosion niot two, but three times! Only feature film from Spiro Razatos, who has nearly 200 stunt credits. (TUBI)

Class of Nuke ‘Em High (1986) When a high school goody-two-shoes couple smoke some weed that was grown in a nuclear power plant, he turns into an occasional super hero who beats up drug dealers and she has an instant baby who crawls around in the plumbing. The usual wacky sex and violence romp you’d expect from Troma, this one is probably a little better than most. (TUBI)

The Batwoman (1968) When she’s not wrestling or gallivanting around as a rich socialite, The Batwoman fights criminals, mad scientists, and human-fish hybrids dressed in a skimpy bikini on land and under water. The gorgeous Maura Monti captivates in the lead role in this highly entertaining schlock from the Mexican king of the genre, Rene Cardona. (Midnight Pulp)
