Yes you are correct Flex, I was thinking of him more from an original aspect from the time period. Someone who really stood out from the crowd with his own uniqueness.Flex wrote:I like Frank Sinatra fine.
As for Wray, he may be a better guitarist but Elvis predates him by two years so it's kind of a moot point.

You kids should turn off those punk rocker rock records for five minutes and listen to some real music! Hey, Mavis, remember this one?Heston wrote:I fucking hate him too, but was waiting for back-up. Of course not that wasn't his thing. But with Elvis did he pick his own material? I don't know as for him being so great with all the different styles as they were just styles that were popular of the time.Silent Majority wrote:It's not Elvis' guitar on Jailhouse Rock, but on the Sun Sides and in early live performances you can always hear Presley's rhythm work. Johnny Cash singled out Elvis' chunky guitar style for praise in his autobiography. I'm not arguing that Eddie Cochran was less talented than Elvis, but even down to his hairstyle he was influenced by Elvis. I also have more respect for an artist when they self-generate material, but that wasn't the way it was done in those days in the big market. SInatra never wrote a word in his life, but I think his records and originality speak for themselves. Not that anyone else on this board likes Frankie.Marky Dread wrote:Elvis had a great voice was good looking and a top performer. But so were plenty of others who could really play their instruments and write fantastic material of their own. I am not knocking Elvis here and I am a fan he made some awesome records but you mention the guitar being heavy on Jailhouse Rock which it is and again a great record, but it's not Elvis playing that guitar unlike say Cochrane who could play drums, piano, and guitar and had a good voice to boot.
Very good point. Link Wray's guitar sounds wipes the floor with Elvis'. But would LInk have been at home playing a gospel or country song?As for other artists with a heavy sound you had plenty like Bo Diddley, Link Wray, and countless other rock-a-billy bands who had no success and are on some rare compilation.
As for those Sun recordings they are pure magic.

I'll show Sinatra some respect for both The Manchurian Candidate and Suddenly, two excellent flicks.

When he was at his most vital, yes. For movie soundtracks and his later years, he would just sing whatever was put in front of him.Marky Dread wrote:But with Elvis did he pick his own material?
That nobody had every put into a big blender and drawn from at the same time before.I don't know as for him being so great with all the different styles as they were just styles that were popular of the time.
He had absolutely no time for method acting, demeaning both Brando in Guys and Dolls and Monty Clift in From Here to Eternity. When you think of Frank as a lovable posturing jackass, a la Zapp Brannigan, every single anecdote about his life becomes both palatable and hilarious.I'll show Sinatra some respect for both The Manchurian Candidate and Suddenly, two excellent flicks.

I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .
