Ha! When I was writing a lecture on grunge this spring—because these fucking kids keep asking me about grunge—I tried to include some stuff about Pearl Jam and couldn't believe how boring they are even from a narrative standpoint. The Ticketmaster thing that went nowhere is the most interesting thing about them. How does a band that dull inspire such devotion from some people?

When I was writing a lecture on grunge this spring—because these fucking kids keep asking me about grunge—I tried to include some stuff about Pearl Jam and couldn't believe how boring they are even from a narrative standpoint. The Ticketmaster thing that went nowhere is the most interesting thing about them. How does a band that dull inspire such devotion from some people?

I have no idea. I remember when Ten came out and a lot of my friends were super into it. I was like "uh, they sound like a generic classic rock band." I did admire Eddie Vedder for awhile back in the 90s because he seemed like an outspoken feminist, but then he dumped his first wife (the one who was with him since before he was famous) for a model. So, just another boring rock cliche. And I also think he has the worst voice in rock music - I'd rather listen to that braying goat that Flex loves (and you people keep getting confused with the far superior DM) than EV.

I actually know a couple who follow Pearl Jam. And they are otherwise great people.

Still, my point is that stuff either clicks or doesn't. That PJ and GD click with so many is just … strange.
