I'm finally getting a chance to read this. I love that Sam Simon came up with the Flintstones theme parody lines off the top of his head.

It's stunning how poor the reception was to so many episodes that are understood to be the high point of the series.

I can see how a show that was about family issues that gradually became way more surreal would be a bit jarring. I certainly didn't feel that way at the time but hey I was 10.

Jeff Martin: Mindless groupthink is a recurrent theme on The Simpsons, and I think the monorail episode is the best – and certainly my favourite – example of Springfield mob mentality. Watching the episode, I decided to go ahead and time it. From Lanley whistling in the back of the auditorium to the entire town marching on the town hall steps singing “Monorail!” is a little less than two minutes. I think it took Harold Hill at least four minutes to whip up River City.

One of the earlier ones that I remember the "tonight on the Simpsons" commercial really well for. They made a very big deal of the scene where Snake bears down on Bart with his car.
