There's a kind of nastiness to season one that I really like. Sure, the characters aren't as developed and the characteristic humour hasn't yet been found, but there's an acidic nature to family and tradition that was consistently eroded thereafter. But in terms of golden age Simpsons, you're right that it's 3–9 (seven seasons of golden age? Christ but that's nuts. VH, jr. has been binging the Simpsons from the beginning. He's now on season four. He likes Nelson a little too much.
