Jon, On the Itchy & Scratchy CD-ROM, is there a way to get out of the dungeon without using the wizard key?

Depends on which ones you already own.
Swordfish - okay
Rain Dogs - adore
Mule Variations - like a lot
Hmmm...

Alice.

Barring that... Blood Money.
I've been giving Waits' Alice a few spins. I think I agree with Beej that I prefer him in blues/rock mode. It's still an enjoyable record. One song that blows me away is the last one: "Fawn." That violin sound is amazing and the player has this great way of (what sounds to me like) starting with a note off key and bending it almost tortuously into key. Really good stuff.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I prefer Waits in bluesy-jazzy shuffle too. I definitely want to investigate the later albums more fully though.

On some level I think Orphans might be his most enjoyable work. Has a lot of my favorite Waits songs on it. Real Gone's probably my second favorite these days.

The NPR Atlanta show from a couple years back is required listening I think. If you don't have that, it's totally essential, way better than both of his official live albums.
