You know that episode where Hank's credit rating becomes ruined because he's accidentally listed in a database as not returning some porn videos and has to clear his name? I feel like I'm going thru that myself. For several years, on several university websites, I'm referred to by my full name, but I never ever use my middle name, so it's kinda jarring. I made a casual inquiry a couple years ago and nobody knew how to fix it, or said it wasn't their problem. Several weeks ago, I decided, fuck it, let's get this taken care of. Again, I've bounced around various IT people and HR people, each pointing me to the other or telling me I could do it myself. Finally spoke to someone yesterday who said, yup, he could change how my name was displayed. Huzzah! Log in this morning: nope, still no change. I want my credit rating back to normal!

Usually that would be a change in AD and or Outlook - assuming they are Winders based. Changes can take time to propagate depending on how many nodes etc.

I was told that everything updates overnight, but nope. What's been funny/frustrating is all the departments looking at my online info and saying, "No middle name at our end." Well, somewhere it exists, and all these university websites that I have to log into display my middle name, so they're drawing that data from somewhere. Why does nobody know where that is? What if a woman got married and took her husband's name, or divorced and went back? Where exactly would that be updated? It's the basic ignorance a good dozen people I've spoken to that amazes. Dale Gribble was right: It's the Beast.

Update: Went back to the department that said they could make the change (but failed) and spoke to a new person, who said they only handle student accounts. Sigh. Back to another support person in another department who said I should put in another request at IT. I mean, what the complete fuck? How hard is this? Regardless, I've been in yet another request and maybe I'll get lucky and find someone who possesses the ancient lore for unlocking the sacred database of the gods.

Final update: I finally found someone who knew how to make the fix. It only took four weeks, but it's done. The Beast has been tamed.

Given that the show wasn't a diseased beast that deserved to be put out of its misery (*cough* Simpsons), I'm generally optimistic that it could still be strong.
