My favourite St. Elsewhere MTM joke was when Betty White had a guest appearance at the same time that John Doe, the amnesiac, thought he was Mary Richards, and he encountered her and said, “Sue Ann?” It was a beautiful and early acknowledgement that audiences had acquired a television literacy and you could work with that.

If your throat isn’t swallowing a softball in the St. Elsewhere episode where Morrison places a stethoscope onto the chest of the woman who received his dead wife’s heart, you’re emotionally dead. Just a gut-wrenching moment of goodbye.

Re: Currently watching.
They kinda ended up bungling Morrison in the second half of the series I think (making him a pro-life, whiny goofball) but in those first few seasons his stories were brilliantly poignant.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 Feb 2023, 10:57pmIf your throat isn’t swallowing a softball in the St. Elsewhere episode where Morrison places a stethoscope onto the chest of the woman who received his dead wife’s heart, you’re emotionally dead. Re: Currently watching.
He was somewhat of a Matt Murdock character—how much abuse and trauma can he constantly be put thru? And it was done because he was already set-up as the guy we root for, the doctor who cares too much. So the writers cheated a bit there, just going to the well on him over and over because they'd primed the audience to want him to overcome.Flex wrote: ↑10 Feb 2023, 12:23amThey kinda ended up bungling Morrison in the second half of the series I think (making him a pro-life, whiny goofball) but in those first few seasons his stories were brilliantly poignant.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑09 Feb 2023, 10:57pmIf your throat isn’t swallowing a softball in the St. Elsewhere episode where Morrison places a stethoscope onto the chest of the woman who received his dead wife’s heart, you’re emotionally dead. That it's going to be set in the Caribbean is suggestive of some very awful temptations for expressing thuh freedums.

She's awful, but she only has a very brief couple of scenes in the second season.

I'd completely forgotten about this show. Didn't even know a S2 existed so I have that to look forward to at least.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑12 Feb 2023, 10:26amWell, poop, Avenue 5 was cancelled. Wonderfully insane. Alas.

If you liked the first season, you’ll like the second. But it neither worked for a lot of poopyheads.Low Down Low wrote: ↑12 Feb 2023, 7:17pmI'd completely forgotten about this show. Definitely worked for me. Had shades of the Hitchhikers Guide about it, just great fun and backed with the quality you'd expect from an Iannucci production.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑12 Feb 2023, 10:51pmIf you liked the first season, you’ll like the second.
