My brother-in-law is ex-military, solid conservative guy (tho he votes social democrat these days as he loathes the Liberals by instinct but is repulsed by what has become of the right). I like him a lot, we share a number of views. That said, boy, he hates cities and the people who dwell within. He's fond of saying that Toronto should have a wall built around it, not to keep people out but keep people in.

It's such an odd thing because I always feel more insecure in a small town. Greater chance someone's got access to a gun, more likely intolerant of … lots of stuff, not a lot of places to go if someone goes wrong.
I work with people who live in all parts of the country and our office is in DC. I swear nearly all of the folks in the interior think DC, NYC, and any big city is some sort of warzone. The truth is always that these people never go to cities so the imagination gets to work.
It's a funny thing that the popular imagination is stuck in 1972 when it comes to cities. Especially given the steady gentrification over the past four decades that has pushed out more and more of "those people."
I think it goes both ways, when I get into the rural country towns I certainly bring my big city biases (even though I live in a small town now). My favorite one that my wife commented on is that I speak to rural folk carefully and don't break the three syllable word barrier and always wear a baseball cap and hoodie in those parts.

Ha! I avoid going back to Saskatchewan just so I don't have to negotiate that horseshit. I've become increasingly intolerant of rural bullshit. I'm done with the casual bigotry and indulged victimhood because they don't want to share the world with others. I used to engage and have conversations, trying to be more sympathetic, but looking at the politics coming out of those places, fuck 'em. They have a spoiled child's view of the world and I'm not going to have an adult conversation with them.

I am with you and stay heads down in those places. I used to try to bridge the gap and roll with stuff but after careful reflection I just don't give a damn anymore.

The irony of that is our climate has gone tits up because of all the stuff that has been pumped into the air for the past 150+ years.
