Re: The Future of the Democratic Party
That list looks about right. Warren has impressed me the most. No limp centrist rhetoric about real Americans and jobs and the middle class, but strong assertions about taxing the wealthy and busting up giant tech companies. This ain't Reaganism but more cosmopolitan, but a genuine break from both parties neoliberalism of the past forty-plus years.

I agree with your list except for Bernie. I'm super tired of white men in power. Would *love* to see Abrams run.

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party
Obviously not going to tell a woman (or anyone else) that they have to go vote for a white guy, although my personal thinking is that a committed socialist is going to do more to curtail (inherently racist, patriarchal) capitalist power structures than, say, a Cory Booker figure. And it wouldn't be nothing to have our first Jewish president, I think. That said, Warren is actually arguably to Bernie's left on a number of issues and she doesn't come with all the white guy blinders, which I think makes her what should be an obviously more compelling candidate.
Abrams could move up to my #1 or #2 depending on what platform she rolled out, but she already had strong enough credentials working with both more center and more left factions of the party that she seems like an obvious "unity candidate" if she runs.

The thing is, though, as a Jewish person, the last thing I want is a Jewish president. Because if something goes wrong, guess who they are going to go after first. I agree he would be better than Booker, but I am just seriously tired of old white men being in power.Flex wrote: ↑02 Apr 2019, 3:18pmObviously not going to tell a woman (or anyone else) that they have to go vote for a white guy, although my personal thinking is that a committed socialist is going to do more to curtail (inherently racist, patriarchal) capitalist power structures than, say, a Cory Booker figure. Yeah, that's a fair and depressing point.JennyB wrote: ↑02 Apr 2019, 3:25pmThe thing is, though, as a Jewish person, the last thing I want is a Jewish president. It'll obviously be interesting to see how the primary shakes out. There's a few genuinely exciting contenders in the mix who seem to have plausible paths to victory, which will actually make it even more crushing if Biden just walks away with the nomination.

Hearing the lame defences of him from the usual suspects gives uncomfortable chills of 2016 when Clinton was anointed before the primaries began. Biden would be a loud and proud declaration that women and young people don't matter. If these accusations against him are a conspiracy (*snort*), god fucking bless the conspirators.

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party
Congrats Democrats of Wisconsin for failing to get out and vote - allowing an openly homophobic and racist candidate to win the Wisconsin Supreme Court election. The old white people vote like clockwork - granted they have the means and the time to vote. They also have the means and the time to shop at 3-4 grocery stores every day chasing coupons...but that should not be an excuse. The guy was a horrible candidate. His opponent did a terrible job with messaging (she really failed to attack his extremist views - yet another example of a Democrat trying to be the "nice" person)...but at the end of the day - not enough people got out and voted.

I won't blame people for choosing not to vote for a candidate they don't believe in. The only people to blame for the bad guys getting in are the pieces of shit who voted for them.

Re: The Future of the Democratic Party
I don't blame abstainers either, obviously, but there's a mechanical element of GOTV efforts that simply involve getting people who would vote, but aren't for some reason, to do so. A bad campaign won't do a very good job converting that subset and it's usually the difference between winning and losing elections. The blame there definitely lies with the party and campaign.Silent Majority wrote: ↑03 Apr 2019, 10:59amI won't blame people for choosing not to vote for a candidate they don't believe in. Optics aside, it's why Corbyn was out going door to door the other weekend. Turning non-voters into voters is one of the most low-hanging-fruit ways to achieve political power under our various democratic systems.

As much as liberals continue to wax nostalgic for Obama—and, yeah, I get it, compared to the orange fucknut—but I'm fairly confident that his reputation will decline in the coming years as he is properly assessed as part of the long Reagan era. I'll readily acknowledge that he inherited an economy that was close to total meltdown and that he mostly dealt with a Congress rigidly opposed to allowing him any kind of accomplishment, but was someone who sincerely believed in cosmopolitan neoliberalism.

As if being more cosmopolitan Republicans isn't an ideological stance.
