I enjoy a really good cup of coffee as a treat, but I also drink pretty cheap stuff on the reg since I'm a coffee drinker by volume for sure.

My old work had some old industrial coffee maker in the break room that brewed Starbucks brand coffee. It was he vilest shit I've ever had. I dunno if they never cleaned it or what, but it tasted uniquely awful compared to any random truck stop or gas station coffee I've ever tried. There was a slightly off odor to it too. My theory was that we got the rejected coffee that was decided it couldn't be sold to guests. Even colleagues from other office locations would comment on how bad our coffee tasted (and there's was nothing to write home about either).

One of my sisters is seriously into her coffee, so much so that she bought her own roaster. She buys her beans green, roasts a small batch, grinds, and then brews. The freshness of it all is very noticeable in the taste. As much as I love her coffee, it's far more work than I'd be willing to go thru. We have a grinder and occasionally buy beans, but even that minimal amount of work is more than I really care to engage in for my coffee "experience."

I work in the foodservice industry (marketing/graphic design - but in the industry nonetheless) and like everything - if you own a restaurant/gas station/hotel/whatever - you can buy really cheap coffee, really good coffee - or something in-between. It really does come down to the quality of coffee used - though if the equipment is not maintained/cleaned - it will impact the flavor of even good coffee. Another factor is what type is used. We sell whole bean (the best), ground, ground inside of filter packs, and condensed (the absolute worst). Dispensed coffee machines are terrible. We refer to it as "prison coffee" at work.

I agree that a really good cup as a treat is pretty awesome. I had a cup at a restaurant in Oak Park, Illinois 2-weeks ago that was one of the best cups I've had in ages.

I used to be a coffee snob, but now my gut won't let me drink it. *sigh*

I love all coffee. I appreciate good stuff but diner mud is just fine too. I require at least a cup in the morning.

Coffee is my biggest vice. Would give up booze in a heartbeat if I could only choose one. No milk, one sugar, perfection.

Let's not lie to ourselves, coffee tastes like death. It's warm and gives us that good upper feeling, so we have learned to love it, but it objectively does not taste good. The fancy stuff is a lot less harsh and more palatable, but I doubt I could dive into that as a coffee noob thinking it is as great as I do now.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Nah, I genuinely like the taste of coffee. I don't even get much of a caffeine jolt. I use a bit of cream because it tastes better to me, but I can drink it black and enjoy it just fine.

I second this opinion. I never cared for them - but I know hate them because of the pointless landfill waste they create.

Agreed that it comes down to personal taste so if caffeine isn’t your drug of choice fair enough but even the strongest coffee served at Starbucks tastes like mildly coffee flavoured milk and black is dishwater. That percolator stuff that is served in cafes, diners etc.. there is a reason it is free. If you have a Long Black or Espresso it is like comparing an asprin to crack. Even a Flat White has more kick than a weeks worth of free top up.
