It's not unprecedented, tho. Studies of American culture during the Great Depression have shown that movies and advertising continued to be geared toward material prosperity, regardless of reality. Part of it was the target audience—those who still had jobs and money—and part was aspirational/inspirational that this too shall pass. Advertising is all fantasy anyway, but those ads are especially distasteful.
