The film Pervert's Guide to Ideology is a pretty fun introduction to him.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑27 Oct 2022, 12:10pmNever read any of his stuff (not to my recollection), but one of those guys who pops up over and over in other stuff I've read.eumaas wrote: ↑27 Oct 2022, 12:06pmZizek has a few books that stand out as coherent wholes, but a lot of his books are just theme and variation remixes of his articles that already draw on prior work. His three touchstones are Hegel, Marx, and psychoanalysis (specifically Lacanian). This can make his more technical works pretty tough for a beginner, but he has a knack for illustrating hard concepts with jokes, anecdotes, readings of popular culture, and social observations. The film kind of demonstrates how much he'd benefit by having an editor to organize his material.

Not surprisingly, I suppose, it's popular cultural stuff where I've come across him. I'll hunt down the film, tho. I read some of his stuff in a philosophy class in college and otherwise I mostly read him in interviews and so forth now. I sort of remember people were annoyed at him for taking some weird kinda anti-metoo positions I think but I don't really keep track of this stuff enough to know the details.
His core insight of "take hard to understand concepts and make them relatable with pop culture" still seems like a winner to me.

One of the things I've tried to impress upon students in my popular culture class is that one of the reasons it's important to treat it seriously (meaning more than just a dumb distraction) is that popular culture is the language we all speak now. We draw from all manner of popular cultural texts to perceive and express our understanding of the world. As one cultural studies scholar put it, "This ain't no sideshow."

Zizek's gotten in trouble a bunch of times. I think it stems from his Hegelian stance where he feels driven to find the contradiction in something. Sometimes I think he's on the money, other times not so much.Flex wrote: ↑27 Oct 2022, 1:28pmI read some of his stuff in a philosophy class in college and otherwise I mostly read him in interviews and so forth now.
