Getting my local government feet wet tonight...

We recently had a school board member resign and I submitted my application to be considered for the vacancy. The meeting where they choose a replacement board member is tonight.
My community is really struggling with the question of equity and diversity right now. I got involved with a grassroots community group advocating for equity last year and that involvement has led me to putting my name out there tonight.
We are a traditionally white suburb of Milwaukee, but a community that is becoming increasingly diverse and many people are pushing back against that diversity. We've had some ugly racial incidents in our schools over the past couple of years (and honestly...they were happening when I was a student 25 years ago). The school district has done a poor job of addressing those issues. This is why we felt the need to create our own group to not just advocate for change, but to actively work to make that change happen.
Anyway, I'm 1 of 9 candidates tonight. I feel I have a good shot, but if I don't get the nod I know there is still a lot of work I can do to make this community a better place...and I'm wearing a Clash t-shirt under my shirt and tie.
