A Long Hot Summer begins (a dumpster fire chat)

Post by BostonBeaneater »

I'm watching the nationwide riots to kick of the weekend. It's 8PM in Minneapolis and the state is gassing it's people.

I just returned home about an hour ago after a week of traveling.

I came home to the smell of tear gas, helicopters overhead, and toxic smoke from burning buildings.

It's very unnerving.

And yes, it's going to be quite a while before this settles down here.

No. It's really quiet here in St. Paul right now. Just got off the phone with my eldest brother in north east Minneapolis - all quiet there as well. The Guard seems to be making a difference, along with the curfew.

Guess I spoke too soon - South Mpls. still in the shit. (where I grew up). The Guard not cutting it. Talk of active duty MP rapid reaction force being called in from New York. Some people get their kicks from death & disaster. And they ain't all cops or military. Full on martial law is so cool, right? Thanks a lot, assholes.

I hope all of you in the area are OK. This brings a new element to the 'stay safe' message we have right now.

Cheers, mate. Nice to get another bit of encouragement rather than the message that I should go hungry because I can't buy any damn food because all the grocers are boarded up. Yeah - self interest.

I appreciate you're in a shitty situation and I was remiss in not wishing you the safety and comfort that I would to any of my friends. I've been in your position in the eye of the storm and I was scared and hoping for the return of order. It's much easier for me to hold my opinion in a city which isn't in turmoil.

With that caveat, the reclaiming of a public voice and exercise of strength by a population who have been forced to endure so much is one that has potential to be the catalyst for real social change. The recognition of, and the beginning of bringing a fight to, a common enemy by a swathe of Americans who just want the same rights as their paler countrymen is an incredibly brave move. They have had a war waged against them and it isn't my place to censure their relatively very peaceful return strike. They're doing more for the common cause of freedom than any state paid soldier since WW2. Even if it makes one filthy cop think twice before brutally murdering a citizen because of their skin colour, it seems worth it. How long could the world ask black and working class America to put up with these indiscriminate killings?
