Thanks Matey, and how big is a mansion?matedog wrote: ↑18 Aug 2020, 3:49pmWikipedia's definition of McMansion seems accurate: McMansion is a pejorative term for a large "mass-produced" dwelling. Real mansions tend to be older, grander, with expensive/fine details. McMansions are very large, came in vogue in the 80's/90's (that's my understanding) and tend to be much more cheaply produced. They are also a lot more affordable than a real mansion. So people who want massive homes without the cost of an early 20th century Victorian or something have that option.101Walterton wrote: ↑18 Aug 2020, 3:42pmWhat defines a mansion ( or McMansion)?JennyB wrote: ↑18 Aug 2020, 2:21pmYep. Square footage? Not sure, but scanning some McMansion Hell write ups, some of them are a lot larger than I had thought. I lived in a McMansion in northern Virginia and it was big, but a lot of McMansions like Jenny posted are comparable to actual mansions.101Walterton wrote: ↑18 Aug 2020, 3:50pmThanks Matey, and how big is a mansion?matedog wrote: ↑18 Aug 2020, 3:49pmWikipedia's definition of McMansion seems accurate: McMansion is a pejorative term for a large "mass-produced" dwelling. Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

A McMansion is made of balsa wood and will blow away in a storm. Does the neighborhood have a dozen versions of the same cheap house? It's a Mc Mansion.Kory wrote: ↑19 Aug 2020, 1:25pmI use McDuck Manor as the gold standard.101Walterton wrote: ↑18 Aug 2020, 4:22pmI just wondered like how many bedrooms, living areas, pool? I read this described as gentrification architecture.
Re: A Long Hot Summer begins (a dumpster fire chat)
That seems right. All the luxury condos going up in SF/Oakland are all uninspired boxes. Lots of concrete and glass.

That's the key distinction to me. A mansion is drawn from a unique set of architectural plans. There's thought put into it based on the owner's interests. A McMansion is built from a set of plans that have been used over and over in any number of cities. A McMansion is any basic suburban home except bigger and gaudier.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑19 Aug 2020, 1:54pmDoes the neighborhood have a dozen versions of the same cheap house? It's a Mc Mansion.
