Friend has been in touch with their family there, they're on the Belarusian border near where it meets up with the border to Russia. it seems incomprehensible to me that they're safe since that seems like an area seeing some major troop movement but I've never lived in a war zone before so what the fuck do I know.

Friend is russian and has more family there. Ancestrally they're from Ukraine though. She has a lot of interesting thoughts about all this (very anti- the war, to be clear)

I'm actually seeing a friend of mine tomorrow evening who is originally from Ukraine (she came here in the early 90s with her family when they started letting Jews out). She is devastated.

Glad they are safe!!! I have family near the area but not in Ukraine and have been worried myself, so I can’t imagine what I’d be feeling with loved ones actually there. Such a horrible and sad situation, I hope your friend’s family continues to stay safe through all of this!

I have an ex-girlfriend from Ukraine. My morning started with a cup of coffee and watching footage of her hometown being hit with a missile. She lives in the US. I checked in with her and her family's safe for now at least.

The family in Slovakia has some broad opinions on the matter. They share a small portion of their eastern border with Ukraine. I'm aware that they are quite worried about the situation. I think the older generation is generally wary of Russia, though their views on communism are pretty mixed. One of my mid-20s male cousins who has shared a lot of anti-vax stuff has unsurprisingly shared semi-pro Russian stuff. The stuff itself doesn't seem so bad, but the people who he is sharing have some very pro-Russian stuff. Here's an excerpt (not what a cousin shared, but something else from someone he did share): "The US and Great Britain are calling for war, not Russia, which they pushed into a corner, which had no where to retreat. People in Slovakia must also realize this, that in the case of Ukraine, the main aggressor is the Ukrainian puppet regime controlled by the USA. Also, people need to realize that by supporting this Ukrainian dictatorial regime they become supporters and advocates of neo-nazism and ethnic cleansing."
