The Assange apologists should maybe read this. You can go on and on all you want about your disdain for rape culture, but you are helping to perpetuate it. You're rape apologists. Own it and maybe you can start to do better.

Also, Howard, if you aren't Jewish, don't you DARE fucking try to tell me what and what isn't antisemitic.

To everyone else, sorry about this. As someone who just saw her state legislature destroy the lives of trans kids yesterday, erode our voting rights and even further push abortion rights down the drain, I have had it up to HERE with Very Online Leftists who don't do shit.

No apology needed or accepted. I could not agree more with your stance and ability to see through this hatred.

While I understand people's instinct to engage and let assholes know that they are apologists for inhumane behaviour, I'll repeat my suggestion to not engage with them. Absolutely nothing you say will encourage reflection or regret. They're either dupes or genuine fascists plying their trade here while pretending to be on the left (or, yuck, part of that odious form of the left that is indistinguishable from right-wing thugs). Engaging them is validation that they belong with those who care about real human beings. Shun them, grant them no audience, let them slither away.

One of my favourite students of all time was in my punk class this term. They're the child of Romanian immigrants, so no fans of Communists or Russians, right? During one discussion, they mentioned being irritated at leftist friends who romanticize the Soviet Union because, yeah, socialism ("socialism")! Utter ignorance about life in those countries during the Cold War, just being edgy. I told the class about callow, edgy me when I was, like, 20 years old. I had a red hammer & sickle shirt that I wore regularly. I was sticking up for socialism (with a shirt!) and showing people I didn't care what they thought. Just embarrassing as fuck to think back to now. But that's part of being 20—a lack of experience, deeper knowledge, and especially consideration about what that symbol represents. Maybe not as bad as punks ironically using a swastika, but that same lack of thought at work.

Yes hindsight is of course a very useful tool. Though I respect what symbols like the Swastika can do to people's emotions and the obvious pain it can understandably cause.

I don't think the early punks used it as an ironic gesture as such it was pertinent and a deliberate way of saying to the older generation fuck you we will do and wear what we want.

I know there is Vivienne and Malcolm's spiel about the demystification of symbols and wearing stuff like a piece of art but that's all college graduate bullshit really. The symbols are incredibly powerful and living in an age where evils like the National Front existed waiting at the school gates to distribute their vile propaganda sadly some of those young kids were ripe for the picking.

I lost friends who were good kids caught up in this rubbish that they didn't truly understand. A sad time indeed.

When I do my Rock Against Racism, explaining the Clapton rant and the National Front and anti-immigrant politics, I add, "Thank goodness all that stuff is fifty years in the past, huh?" A laugh line that never gets a laugh.

Yep I would sincerely like to think this never ending cycle of hatred and ignorance will end one day. But sadly we don't seem capable of learning simple facts from our own history. I hold out a firm belief that one day the good guys will win. Until then I see stormtroopers coming over the hill.

I choose to be hopeful—ignoring lots and lots of contrary evidence—because pessimism is draining,

I agree for sure.
There's a hornets nest at the bottom of my garden. Left alone those hornets don't really bother anyone. Though maybe those hornets are having it too good and I'm not really sure if I trust them. Maybe I'll just go poke their nest with a big stick they might sting a neighbour or a neighbour's child. I'll just watch from a distance feeling pleased with myself knowing I've uncovered something and let everyone in my wake get stung. Because basically it's all about me. And I'm alright Jack. ;)

Coincidentally, I discovered a wasp in the house about an hour ago. I fucked up getting him in a glass to take outside, so he got loose and I have no idea where he is now. I keep looking at the same pane of glass where he originally was, but nope.

Bees, Wasps etc I usually put a little sugar water on my hand and allow them to climb on. They enjoy the sweet taste then I let them fly away to freedom.
