The What Generation Are You Poll?
So, what generation are you from? I'm guessing the majority of us are jaded Gen X'ers... but who knows??

Xer, of course. But I'm gonna quibble with your bracketing dates. A generation is normally about 20 years, give or take a year or 2. Gen X is roughly '64 to '82, Millennials '83–'01, and Z is '02–?.

Kinda goofy to think Millennials stop several years before the millennium.WestwayKid wrote: ↑08 Jun 2023, 5:26pmI adjusted the years based on info found on WikipediaDr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Jun 2023, 5:18pmXer, of course. I always thought the term was meant to indicate that they/we had the change of millennium as our early formative experience. In that case, it would make sense to cut it off around when a kid would be too young to remember the turn of the millennium, no?Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Jun 2023, 5:33pmKinda goofy to think Millennials stop several years before the millennium.WestwayKid wrote: ↑08 Jun 2023, 5:26pmI adjusted the years based on info found on WikipediaDr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Jun 2023, 5:18pmXer, of course. Re: The What Generation Are You Poll?
My understanding is that they are the last generation born in 2nd millenium / the first to reach maturity in the new. Plus the whole 20-year thing—why are Millennials such an abbreviated generation?Flex wrote: ↑08 Jun 2023, 5:43pmI always thought the term was meant to indicate that they/we had the change of millennium as our early formative experience. Mmmm, the 20 year thing is new to me. Pew, for example, notes the boomer generation is an outlier in how long it is at nearly 20 years: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads ... -z-begins/Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Jun 2023, 5:58pmMy understanding is that they are the last generation born in 2nd millenium / the first to reach maturity in the new. In any case, not an exact science, this is all a tad on the arbitrary side, etc. but I do sort of agree with the millennial rule of thumb that if you're too young to remember 9/11 and understand its importance at the time, you're not a millennial. In the u.s. thats for sure a generationally defining moment.

Also, thank you to our brave greatest gen member for helping defeat the Nazis (or for escaping to South America)

Fucking lol
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Re: The What Generation Are You Poll?
I largely defer on the topic to William Strauss and Neil Howe, who developed a generational theory of history. Their use of 20 years was related to a person's stage of life (childhood/youth; adulthood; middle-age; elder), each of which were around 20 years and marked by distinct roles. They also emphasized the role of significant events as cut-offs in generations, as your stage of life had considerable influence in how you reacted to and were shaped by events.Flex wrote: ↑08 Jun 2023, 6:09pmMmmm, the 20 year thing is new to me.
