As long as Harris doesn't fuck-up the debate—which would be stunning given her own abilities and Trump's—the momentum is such that it would take a helluva October surprise to alter the course. That NC is in play is a massive canary in the coalmine for Republicans.

Barring any surprises or dramatic reversals, the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential candidate won’t have the support of his party’s 2000, 2004 or 2012 presidential nominees.

What’s more, Trump also won’t have the support from the GOP’s 2000, 2004, 2012, 2016 or 2020 vice presidential nominees.

You can extend/speculate further and say that no Republican nominee going back to maybe Nixon would support Trump (I can't rule out that Nixon wouldn't embrace the purity of Trump's grievances), and the only VP nominee who would/is is Palin.

In my mind silence equals complacency. Many of Trumps former cabinet members and a few high level Republicans have made their disdain for him clear, a former president, whether we like him or not, speaking out against MAGA would be great.

I appreciate that view and, yes, all these Republicans speaking up in theory gives cover or impetus for other Republicans to, at minimum, not vote the current ticket. That said, the significance of those Republicans is that they have some kind of connection to Trump—they served in his administration, mostly—whereas Shrubby has no link. And he has largely dropped out of sight since 2008 (side note: 16 years seems a lifetime). How many people will be moved by his words on, like, anything? Grudging credit to him for understanding he will never be an elder statesman yet not inserting himself in public dialogue. He should feel lucky that he can do his shitty paintings outside of a cell.
