I like the driver's license analogy. You need to pass a written and practical test if you want to legally drive. Dont want to take the tests you can have a water pistol or maybe a sling shot you can even have a knife but no not a real gun. Dont want to take the tests for a driver's license you're welcome to walk, bike, public transport etc
And the stupid thing is that it's sensible middle ground. It isn't calling to ban all guns, just demonstrating competence and responsibility. Yet resistance from the gun fetishists because what's driving the bus is the profit motive. And crying eagles with colourfast clothes.
Hello,

This can be blamed on our forefathers who made gun ownership a right - depending on your interpretation of the 2nd amendment. The gun industry and NRA have told the government how to interpret the 2nd amendment for us. Driving is not a right.
Cars didn't exist when the slave owners ruled the country
Hello,

Neither were cell phones. Does this mean we can license cell phones? That'd be great - no cell phone for you , you flunked the cell phone test!
Big difference. Whats really the worst can happen if I cant use my phone properly. Also the 2nd amendment was written in the time of single shot rifles that took a couple of minutes to reload if you were really good. Also if you managed to hit a target beyond 20 yards you were pretty fucking lucky.

And relying on rules laid down by the ancients isn't always the best way for a modern society to function.

The well regulated militia part always gets completely ignored.

The existence of a standing army also complicates the 2A. The importance of a well-regulated militia—something so important that it needed to be put in the Constitution—was because the FF were suspicious of having a permanent army. That was the route to tyranny. A militia in times of need was consistent with republican values of the citizen putting aside private interests to commit to the nation. So in practice the 2A is as relevant as the 3A, about forcibly quartering soldiers in a person's home. Turning it into a guarantee of private firearm ownership and for entirely private purposes is wholly invented.
