Re: The Future of the Republican Party
One of the things that strikes me about the right—I'm more familiar with the Canadian context—is that they aren't very good anymore at speaking to the non-converted. They just aren't all that adept at persuasion. You either buy into my grievance or you're part of the elitist conspiracy against goodness. So they're abandoning that middle zone of citizens who could be persuaded, but don't speak that language of zealotry. The parallels to the late 60s, early 70s keep coming back to me, with leftist radicals wholly unable to speak to the middle, so sure in their righteous anger and oblivious to how they sounded to most.gkbill wrote: ↑08 Feb 2023, 12:43pmHello,

Re: The Future of the Republican Party
I think it's impossible to overstate the influence qanon has had on the entire party and its media apparatus. Trying to watch Fox news as a normal person is almost like watching something being spoken in an alien language. These people have all constructed an alternate universe with main characters, villains and plots that bear no meaningful relationship to reality. The bizarreness guarantees, I guess, a loyal following but there's a hard limit to how attractive such an obviously deranged worldview can be. The suburban white middle class is basically fine with or supportive of racism and bigotry, but they don't want any of it to come off too weird or uncouth. So Republicans are losing ground in areas they really "should" play well in because of the weirdoization of the Right.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Feb 2023, 1:37pmOne of the things that strikes me about the right—I'm more familiar with the Canadian context—is that they aren't very good anymore at speaking to the non-converted. Addendum: and trump is obviously exhibit A but it's not like DeSantis isn't an extremely bizarre, cruel weirdo either. The problem is the mainstream media is going to be so intent on making any non-trump republican seem "normal" that they'll basically run interference for what an unseemly lunatic DeSantis is.

Re: The Future of the Republican Party
That's a legitimate fear, that should DeSantis get the nomination the narrative will be of turning a page and repudiating Trump, rather than "improving" on Trump's grievance politics. Because, of course, to a spectacle-driven media, if DeSantis doesn't engage in tantrums on Twitter, it must prove he's distinct from Trump.Flex wrote: ↑08 Feb 2023, 3:35pmAddendum: and trump is obviously exhibit A but it's not like DeSantis isn't an extremely bizarre, cruel weirdo either. Re: The Future of the Republican Party
Hello,
I wasn't sure where to submit this. This is the funniest Republican I've heard in a long time.
Here's a tease: "Really, who lies about playing college volleyball? Who does that? If you’re gonna lie, at least make it about something big, like you actually won the 2020 presidential election."
