https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... ge-managedIt works because, with Brexit, a lot of people want to be lied to (it’s all going to be fabulous; the EU will shred the withdrawal agreement; the Irish will panic and do as they’re told). And if that is your desire, Johnson has another Leonard Cohen number for you: I’m Your Man. But – and this is the fundamental problem of his accession to power – a lot of people don’t want to be lied to.
Insofar as he has a strategy, Johnson’s plan is all based on the power of a lie, or to use the polite term, a bluff. The bluff is a no-deal Brexit. The basic belief of Johnson and those around him is that the way to get a great deal out of the EU is to pretend that you are quite happy to crash out without one. But bluffing only works if you do not already have a reputation as one of the world’s biggest bluffers. In this poker game, Johnson doesn’t have a tell. He is the tell. To put him into No 10 is to erect a neon sign over Downing Street that says: “Don’t believe a word of it.” The knowingness that Johnson has exploited to such great effect works within a circle of collusion. Outside the circle, knowingness is just plain old knowledge. Everybody knows that Johnson is the lying captain of a very leaky boat. Nobody in Europe is about to climb aboard.

I wouldn't agree Boris is three decades in the making. But I sincerely believe he's the Conservative party's fall guy like a get out of jail free card. They know Boris is a buffoon and if he fails it's easy to turn around and say "Hey it's only Boris".Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Jul 2019, 7:07amhttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... ge-managedIt works because, with Brexit, a lot of people want to be lied to (it’s all going to be fabulous; the EU will shred the withdrawal agreement; the Irish will panic and do as they’re told). lmao after all this "a vote for lib dems is a vote to stop brexit from happening" stuff, they're refusing the most viable plan on the table to stop a no deal brexit and get a second vote put to a ballot because they hate corbyn. these guys are so fucking shitty they could run as Democrats over here.

What's fascinating (in a sad way) is that Brexit is a permanent act—once it happens, it's a whole new set of consequences that change the landscape. Supporting Corbyn in a very limited way is a political act, which is to say temporary. It's not making him dictator for life plus giving him an immortality potion. Is the idea of Corbyn as an interim PM really more of an existential nightmare than a no-deal Brexit?Flex wrote: ↑15 Aug 2019, 3:32pmlmao after all this "a vote for lib dems is a vote to stop brexit from happening" stuff, they're refusing the most viable plan on the table to stop a no deal brexit and get a second vote put to a ballot because they hate corbyn. these guys are so fucking shitty they could run as Democrats over here.

Now, hold on, my understanding from reading conservatives is that liberal and (far/ultra/radical) left only differs in terms of the choice of anthem for their one-world government ambitions.Flex wrote: ↑15 Aug 2019, 3:46pmliberals hate socialism more than literally anything, even destroying their own countryDr. Medulla wrote: ↑15 Aug 2019, 3:44pmWhat's fascinating (in a sad way) is that Brexit is a permanent act—once it happens, it's a whole new set of consequences that change the landscape. Take it easy there are plenty of Smiths songs left for the Tories to reappropriate.

Right out of the 1920s/30s totalitarian playbook—you make your argument that democracy doesn't work by sabotaging it every way possible.

Make England Early Modern Again!"I think [Johnson's] woken everybody up to the reality that he's just going to ram this through. And as I said, the last bloke who tried to do that, we chopped his head off," Bragg said.

Re: Hey limeys
Less ambiguity this time than the Brexit vote about what people are opting for—jumping off a fucking cliff or not (mind you, in that "not" is a further range of possibilities).
