Re: The IMCT Media Criticism Thread
I've been unplugging bit by bit. I've been off Facebook for years and I've only used twitter to follow news an whatnot. While I've enjoyed watching twitter crash and burn, I've stopped using it for news. I've been trying to unplug from the news as well since I really just find it causes anxiety. I like being informed but the constant bombardment of info is not good for my happiness. I find scrolling the headlines on the NYT, Boston Globe, Reuters, and the NY Post occasionally gives me all the news I need to keep ignorance at bay. I have no need for the trumpeters of outrage bellowing in my ear. People are awful, I know that part. Life is pretty good away from the screens.Flex wrote: ↑10 Nov 2022, 12:30pmRE: twitter, I sort of cheated. I still have a "public" account that I use for work and dorky branding-ish purposes. Outside of a couple random friends, I just follow reporters and stuff, so it's kept me up to date on election stuff (which I need to do for work anyways) and killing my "fun" anonymous account seems to have done the job of stopping me from endless posting and following stupid twitter drama. It's actually probably beneficial for me to spend a little more time maintaining my "public" account in terms of potential new work, so this might be the sweet spot. I also spend, like, a few minutes a day checking news updates instead of endless hours of scrolling.
Doesn't really replace the socialization component, but I'm not sure how much "twitter socializing" has really been a benefit now that I'm even a few days removed from it.

There are a couple legal commentators that I still check on. I don’t post anything and never have (the Boss and I briefly used it before we had phones that could text, so we set our accounts to private and texted to each other that way; most of our tweets consisted of “What do you want for dinner?” “I dunno. Suggest something.” “Pasta?” “No. Don’t worry, I’ll make myself something when I get home.” In retrospect, it was a slo-motion description of familial collapse.)

Ahhh, it's like a nicotine patch to cut the cravings.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

Absolutely. Reducing news intake definitely helped me and I recommend it to others. I don't say unplug completely, but be aware of it and avoid doomscrolling through news—can be as bad as a social media feed. I think that together with being barely on social media has really helped. I started reducing my news intake early last year and found I was better able to cope with other people and not be an asshole.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑10 Nov 2022, 1:48pmI've been unplugging bit by bit. For some it's a requirement of the job, but that being the case, maybe treat it like work—something you do because you must, rather than a compulsion in your off the clock hours.
I think it can give better perspective too in that you have some distance from the events and sometimes come to them later when better information is out there.

Re: The IMCT Media Criticism Thread
So I haven't gotten rid of my twitter account yet, but I've been deleting everything. Since I haven't been posting, I've noticed how I miss tweeting. In fact, as I'm going along my day, I find myself (after seeing something funny or having a stupid thought) thinking about tweeting it. To me, that's messed up. This stupid social media account has hijacked my brain. I'm envious of those who can remain detached, but I guess that's just not how my brain works. *shrugs*

Really does suggest addiction, huh? How many studies have these companies financed that prove this?Mimi wrote: ↑11 Nov 2022, 5:37pmSo I haven't gotten rid of my twitter account yet, but I've been deleting everything. There was a doc on netflix that dug deep into social media. For the life of me, I can't remember the title.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Nov 2022, 8:09pmReally does suggest addiction, huh?
