One of Maddock's followers even informed him of his mistake, but the Michigan Republican replied by saying, "Sure kommie. Good talking point."

John Birch Society. Absolutely insane paranoids from the 50s to around the 70s. I recently read a history of the Bircher movement and it was striking how much of their worldview has been normalized in the contemporary right. I've met on more than one occasion people who believe that most brands of toothpaste have mind-controlling chemicals in them (presumably some variation of flouride). They used a brand—my memory is that it was Maclean's—that defied the Illuminati and was safe. Brave, defiant Maclean's, the lone hold-out to the global toothpaste mind-control conspiracy.revbob wrote: ↑31 Mar 2024, 7:34amThat and the flouride in the water supplyDr. Medulla wrote: ↑29 Mar 2024, 4:37pmThe problem is the sheeple keep breathing in the chem trails, which means they're too dumb to understand what's really happening.Kory wrote: ↑29 Mar 2024, 4:34pmBut that hasn't fixed anything so far. Re: No, No, Don't Worry. Racism is Pretty Much Over.
One of the very first issues that I had to deal with when I was elected to town council was evaluating whether we wanted to keep added fluoride in our water supply. One council member hated it and got enough folks to at least have staff put it on some of our agendas for consideration. This was pre-pandemic when "believe science" or anti-science conspiracy views weren't subject to much partisan sorting and I was, ah, rather surprised at how many people on both council and in the public were pretty conspiracy minded about fluoride.
Fortunately there was enough public health backlash that the issue died on the vine after a few idiotic weeks of discussion.
