Yup. I'm a NASCAR fan (have been since I was a kid in the 80's) and reading the comments whenever something is posted about it on Facebook is great. People were recently mad because NASCAR is testing mufflers for races in places like Chicago. They were mad because they had hip hop artists at their pre-season race in Los Angeles. They complained when NASCAR went from 5 lug nuts to 1, claiming NASCAR was becoming woke like sports car racing. It's actually quite funny.JennyB wrote: ↑15 Mar 2023, 10:04amThe ironic thing is that people did start accusing NASCAR of being woke when they banned Confederate Flags and allowed a Black guy to be a driver.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑15 Mar 2023, 8:26amIt'd be amusing to start doing that to right-wing people. Yeah, I can't fucking stand NASCAR. Shit is so woke. Same thing with evangelicals. Assholes are always pushing that woke stuff of everyone.

My org co-sponsored a protest yesterday at the MO capitol in support of trans rights. The rhetoric now, beyond the ridiculous groomer rhetoric, is that trans people are terrorists who are starting a revolution and are coming for your white, Christian families. Several of dem legislators were there in support, but a few of the republicans where trying to disrupt. Missouri is lowest in the nation for so many things, but this is what they focus on.

The core, unceasing message from the right is: be afraid. Be afraid of everything. Be afraid of your neighbours. Be afraid of thinking. Be afraid of anything even vaguely different than you. And empower right-wing government to eliminate everything that scares you. It is so textbook authoritarian.JennyB wrote: ↑30 Mar 2023, 11:45amMy org co-sponsored a protest yesterday at the MO capitol in support of trans rights. Thanks all. I didn't really do anything but show up there. The accolades belong to the families of trans kids who are risking their lives every damn day living in this state.

It amazes me with all the challenges our country faces, the GOP would rather focus on BS "demons", all the while doing nothing to make our country better.

Re: The Dictator observations thread.
Another (likely, still some ballots out there) complete failure across the ballot of left candidates propped up by the Denver DSA. This follows their risible showing in Aurora a couple years ago where their candidates lost and threw the council balance to Republicans who are now waging an aggressive war on police reform and homelessness; as well as their opposition to all local property tax proposals last election because of how much of a burden they'd be in tough financial times (fuckin' LOL). The one thing the Denver DSA did that's "won" on the ballot is their formal opposition to a massive housing project on the site of a city golf course. So they allied with wealthy incumbent property owners to kill the proposal. Great work keeping more affordable housing out of Denver, DSA. I know there's a popular theory that democrats are worse than Republicans and just stymieing leftward success, but man oh man are the socialists here locally doing a superb job enabling landowners and republicans all by themselves.
I understand that in other cities the DSA is more successful (and seemingly radical) but my opinion of them here locally could not possibly sink any lower.
Addendum: I guess to clarify some of my thinking, the basic problem is that over several election cycles now the DSA (most prominently, but some other further left organizations as well) have failed to materialize as either a mobilizing force that can stand up and elect their own candidates (or bills) OR act a spoiler force in order to extract demands. Having failed at both their final recourse (for impacting any material progress for anyone, anyways) is "coalition partner" for which they are probably in a weaker position to attempt now than they've been at any point in the last decade. Fortunately, I guess, they haven't expressed any desire to join a democratic coalition so I guess they can go back to just being a glorified book club for the time being.
Addendum II: just to get ahead of a likely objection, the local DSA does at least claim to do some mutual aid but it's miniscule compared to the impact and effort of more mainstream orgs, if it exists at all. Not a useful organization. Does not make me think the prospects of armed socialist revolution are very good.

Re: The Dictator observations thread.
I don't know if this is the case in Denver or not, but the DSA also seems (in a lot of places) to have a complete obsession with Israel/Palestine. And not in a nuanced way. And they seem to prioritize it way above issues that *should* be prioritized. It's all so performative and unhelpful and drove people like me away.Flex wrote: ↑05 Apr 2023, 10:26amAnother (likely, still some ballots out there) complete failure across the ballot of left candidates propped up by the Denver DSA. Re: The Dictator observations thread.
I don't think that's as big an issue in Denver - but I know what you mean. Leaving aside anyone's specific thoughts on Israel/Palestine for the moment, it's completely nonsensical to forefront that as an issue if you're trying to create majorities on, like, local school boards and city councils and whatnot.JennyB wrote: ↑09 Apr 2023, 3:18pmI don't know if this is the case in Denver or not, but the DSA also seems (in a lot of places) to have a complete obsession with Israel/Palestine. I'm not the one forcing DSA to be a participant in American electoral politics. They're the ones who are deciding to field candidates and run elections. I find it honestly a little baffling that an organization that expresses such contempt for western liberal democracy (not necessarily incorrectly!) has such a focus on elections. But given that they're seemingly committed to electoral politics, I'd question whether they've deeply considered how important, say, forefronting Israel/Palestine is to winning, like, St. Louis city council seats.
