That seems like such a Nixon thing to happen to a politician.

(One of his aides once told a story about Nixon on the beach with his dog, They'd become separated (the dog went exploring or whatever) and Nixon called the dog back to him. The aide said it was a perfect Hollywood scene, with Nixon kind of stooping to welcome the dog back as it ran to him. And ran to him. And ran to him. And ran right by him.)

This story should be huge, but just like with the wilful bombing of the MSF hospital, I doubt people will care. The American public has so internalized the acceptability of collateral damage ("fog of war" loooooololol!!111mdkdskvsk) that intentionally targeting civilians doesn't matter either. So long as they don't do boots on the ground, the American public is fine with mass slaughter.

Civilian casualties dwarf target casualties in the assassination by drone program. And often the strike doesn't even kill the target. The target may not even be there. So instead a wedding gets wiped out for no reason, that sort of thing.

But who cares? Can't make the perfect the enemy of the good. Didn't Hillary do well in that debate?

The lesson of Vietnam, it seems, is not the immorality of imperialism and the slaughter of civilians but that it's unacceptable for Americans to die in combat. Everything since follows that logic.
