Yeah, I believe this was inspired by the Slow Burn (s1) podcast on weird aspects of Watergate. One of the episodes focused on Martha.WestwayKid wrote: ↑25 Jul 2022, 11:14amDid this start as a podcast?? I remember listening to a podcast that told the story through the eyes of MM (at least I think I remember something like that).Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑24 Jul 2022, 4:06pmMore Nixon! The Boss and I have started watching Gaslit, a darkly humourous account that emphasizes the sinister lunatics and general batshittery around the story, with special attention to Martha Mitchell (her story is more horror story than black comedy). In particular, I think SM would eat this up, but most people here would enjoy it.
We've got one episode left and I can say it's worth watching if only for Liddy, who is played fairly but comically as completely insane. I mean, I recognized a lot of stuff that was depicted in Gaslit and it's jawdropping how easily it translates into dark comedy. I've never read his memoir, but I'm thinking I might have to.

It's fascinating stuff. I reread The Final Days every now and then. I'm going to check out Gaslit for sure.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Jul 2022, 11:19amYeah, I believe this was inspired by the Slow Burn (s1) podcast on weird aspects of Watergate. Watch it with your missuz so you can turn to her every so often and say, "That scene is entirely true."Silent Majority wrote: ↑25 Jul 2022, 1:40pmYou got me.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑24 Jul 2022, 4:06pmMore Nixon! Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I'm not sure what to think about that possibility.

I'm still listening to that book on the Frost-Nixon interviews, but because I've never actually seen them—beyond the usual highlights—I downloaded them and am going to watch over the next few days.

Re: Nixon!
After watching the "Watergate" interview, it's hard not to be … not exactly impressed by Nixon, but still compelled(?) by him. I think of all the Republican presidents of my lifetime—Nixon to Trump—and I really can't imagine any of them other than Nixon to engage in that kind of one-on-one verbal combat, defending their record in that way. Clinton and Obama, definitely. Just a savage force and intellect, but also a neediness there.

Re: Nixon!
Watching the final episode, a hodgepodge of things that didn't neatly fit in the other themed episodes. Nixon is so in his element when talking about engaging with the Chinese leadership. Very confident, none of the defensive aggression that he employs on so many other topics. It's so striking and illustrates how much his insecurities and willingness to give into the darker parts of his psyche compromised him.
