The Future is Unwritten arrives on DVD July 8 from Legacy Recordings. For the DVD release, the film is expanded with about 100 minutes of extra interview footage that didn't make the final cut, touching on the same cast of contemporaries and his influences as the theatrical release: Mick Jones, Bono, Anthony Keidis and Johnny Depp all weigh in on Strummer's legacy.

I can't wait till the Deluxe Blu-ray release which has all 349 hours of Bono's bloviating.threecoffins wrote:Found this. Looks the same as the Euro release, but good to see it finally comin out.

I love that film...but why do smart directors keep giving shameless attention whores a prime forum when it's so dead obvious they'll say anything about anyone for an opportunity to mug for the cameras.

That's my problem with the film as well. It didn't really offer much to the hardcore fan. I think there could have been less adulation and more exploration of the drama and the frustration of his life. I think it was somewhat of an opportunity missed, but a good primer for people who don't know about the man.Rat Patrol wrote:I can't wait till the Deluxe Blu-ray release which has all 349 hours of Bono's bloviating.threecoffins wrote:Found this. I think Bono absolutely should have been in the film. The Clash were his first concert.Rat Patrol wrote:I can't wait till the Deluxe Blu-ray release which has all 349 hours of Bono's bloviating.threecoffins wrote:Found this. Looks the same as the Euro release, but good to see it finally comin out.

Johnny Depp on the other hand...
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I would have been ok with Depp, had he not seemed so preoccupied with not really being there.matedog wrote:

Every time I watched TFIU at a theater, people predictably laughed when they saw JD.Wolter wrote:Seriously...JennyB wrote:He also could have taken off the fucking pirate costume for 5 minutes.Wolter wrote:I would have been ok with Depp, had he not seemed so preoccupied with not really being there.matedog wrote:

Disappointed that there's no cool extras... ie music or Clash/joe clips.. but cool.
I enjoyed the movie a lot, didn't think it was great. I might have had too high hopes for it. I kind of disagree that it wasn't good for the hardcore fan though, there were so many great looking clips I had never seen. But none of them were shown long enough. Maybe it was a great tease for the hardcore fan.
Like his music or not, Bono is a musician who was hugely influenced by The Clash and deserves to be included just as much if not more than any of the actors in it. That being said, I do like all the actors so I didn't mind any of them except Johnny Depp. He's a douche. No one took his part seriously. There's a Hunter S. Thompson documentary out there where Depp is interviewed, also dressed like a fucking pirate. He's a great actor (though he hasn't made a movie I was too interested in for about ten years) but he's still a landlubbin' douche.

I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Oh I know, he deserved to be in the Thompson documentary - and truth be told I don't really care about the 'celebrities' being in TFIU. It just pissed me off that he was dressed as a pirate in both.
