I find that's part of its charm. Everything about it seems a tribute to garage rock.
Hmmm if it had been mixed like a quick garage rock band track it may well have sounded much better. The mix is murky and poorly done.

Except for Mick's hip hop obsession which was very cutting edge at the time and he really saw it through with BAD.

Maybe, but it's also possible that without Mick, Joe's "wilderness years" never ended. Which is to say, Mick grounded him and gave him a confidence that he had a harder time regaining afterwards.
