Post by southsideryan »

Has anybody seen this picture with a sticker of an eyeball instead of the "Trash City" sticker? Thought it was interesting maybe not

According to Von Dutch, the flying eyeball originated with the Macedonian and Egyptian cultures about 5000 years ago. It was a symbol meaning "the eye in the sky knows all and sees all".

Thanks. I didn’t know that Rick Griffin got the idea for this flying eyeball poster from Von Dutch:

Interestingly, Joe Strummer wore t-shirts by Von Dutch (named after the auto detailer) in the early 2000s.

Yeah I remember Joe wearing that t-shirt.

I think Von Dutch sponsored a few Mescaleros gigs, or a festival they played, or something, and that’s why Joe was pictured wearing their stuff for a while. Not that he was obliged to, I think he just helped himself to a few freebies

Joe did like a T shirt. When I saw him with the Meskies he spotted someone in the crowd with a T shirt he liked so he did a swap. Will see if I can find photos from the gig and work out which T shirt he was so keen to get he changed shirts halfway through a gig.

Yeah there's a famous picture from The Clash days at the Rainbow where Joe's swapping his shirt with a member of the audience.

Further to this I'm of the impression that this image is definitely photoshopped.

That Trash City sticker is on Joe's guitar when he played the fireman's benefit at Acton Hall. It don't look like a new sticker and I doubt Joe could've taken it off and put it back on without damage.

Shit! Looks like you are correct mate. I just watched some footage from that gig. You can see it for sure. Good spot.

So Joe must've kept a few of those Trash City stickers then replaced it again later. Unless he used two Telecasters. I wonder if he used one of those copies when his was in for repair. Interesting.
