I was waiting for confirmation that once again it is brick walled. Bummer. I am also a bit disappointed with the track selection. First of all lose the live Clash covers, Joe had enough good solo tracks to fill a best of without having to resort to that. The one rarity then is solo version of Junco Partner (that I really enjoy but...? Why bother with the rarities then? Should have saved that for 002. I would have made certain all the singles were included at the very least. So here is my version of Assembly compiled along the same lines as the original dropping a few and adding a few. What would you change?

1 Coma Girl (single from SC)
2 London Is Burning (single from 001)
3 Johnny Appleseed (single from GAG)
4 Trash City (single from PR)
5 Island Hopping (single from EW)
6 Tony Adams (single from RA&XS)
7 Generations (single from Generations)
8 Sleepwalk (album track EW)
9 Love Kills (single from S&N)
10 Gangsterville (single from EW)
11 Get Down Moses (album track from SC)
12 X-Ray Style (album track RA&XS)
13 Tennessee Rain (single from Walker)
14 15th Brigade (B-side EW)
15 Redemption Song (single from SC)
16 Burning Lights (single from IHACK)
17 Forbidden City (album track RA&XS)
18 Yalla Yalla (single from RA&XS)
19 Filibustro (single from Walker)
I really like the idea of using all the singles even if I don't love a few of them. It's a cut and dry way to tell the story and get a nice cross section of material. This looks like a really solid playlist I'll have to recreate.

My personal post-Clash JS mix, in keeping to Assembly's 16 track length, would be:

1. Filibustero
2. Unknown Immortal
3. Tennessee Rain
4. Trash city
5. Island Hopping
6. Sleepwalk
7. Burning Lights
8. It's A Rocking World
9. X-Ray Style
10. Yalla Yalla
11. Johnny Appleseed
12. Global a go go
13. Bhindi Bhagee
14. Mondo Bongo
15. Coma Girl
16. Get Down Moses

Edit: though I have to say the sequencing/flow of Assembly is really well done, and I know it isn't an easy task with material as eclectic as Joe's.

Strummer's non-Clash work is a rights/company clusterfuck right?
Walker - Virgin
Earthquake Weather/LRW - Epic
Mescaleros - Hellcat
Contract Killer - Villealfa Filmproductions
101ers - Astralwerks
Love Kills - CBS

I'm sure there are overlaps somehow, but this all a bit baffling. 001 was Ignition, Assembly was Dark Horse. Dark Horse seems limited to Meskies and Earthquake Weather material.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Not even clear on the When Pigs Fly either. 001 seemed to sort everything out except the Earthquake Weather stuff.

I'm sure I read an article whch said Dark Horse bought out everything outside of Joe's Clash stuff. Maybe a year back? Could swear I read it on here.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

The Sarah Driver movie "When Pigs Fly" was released in September 1993. Joe recorded the soundtrack in Rockfield Studios, Wales. The film is currently available to view on Amazon. Since 2001 the company that owns the movie is Magnolia Pictures. So I assume they own the soundtrack.

Really makes one appreciate the effort Ignition put in to get all that stuff into one package with 001.

Without listening on headphones, “Coma Girl” on Assembly sounds better to me than the one on Joe Strummer 001. I can definitely hear distortion on the latter since it’s brickwalled. If Assembly is brickwalled as well, it still sounds good to my ears.

Both are brickwalled but Assembly just ever so less. Assembly just sits under the parameters on some tracks. Still to full up for my tastes.

I recommend the book Perfecting Sound Forever, which has a great chapter on the Loudness Wars that birthed brickwalling as well as a proper good run through the history of recorded sound.
Brilliant book, I wish I knew where my copy was.
'Perfecting Sound Forever' - NOT for ever, in your house
I agree, a fascinating book about recording technology. I still think one of the miracles of our age - bordering on sorcery and the supernatural - is how a tiny electrical current can wobble a cardboard disc, and we can hear a human voice or a piece of music. It just shouldn't be possible.
