Revolution Rock: Clash Jukebox
Revolution Rock: Clash Jukebox
Hey y'all. Two questions:
Can someone explain to me why the bolded songs were included on this (Did Strummer/Clash cover them at some point) ?
Does anyone know if there were reggae versions of the italicized songs that the Clash based their reggae versions on?
One more: Does anyone know if Matumbi's reggae version of The Man in Me predates the Clash's?
1. Be Bop A Lula
2. You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover
3. Junco Partner
4. Fujiyama Mama
5. Stagger Lee
6. Brand New Cadillac
7. Time Is Tight
8. Look Here
9. Louie Louei
10. I Fought The Law
11. Dead End Street
12. Evry Little Bit Hurts
13. Pressure Drop
14. Johnny Too Bad
15. Israelites
16. Armagideon Time
17. Wrong Em Boyo
18. Revolution Rock
19. Dance Crasher
20. 54-46 (That's My Number)
21. Man In Me (Version)
22. Police & Thieves
23. Bitzrieg Bop
24. Roarunner
25. Something In The Air
26. Pop Goes The Weazel
27. King Of The Road
EDIT: I found out that John Holt did a reggae version of Stagger Lee sometime between 1962-1979, probably closer to the '79 end (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sq ... fyxqe0ldhe). I havent heard it yet, so I don't know if it, rather than the Ruler's version, was the inspiration.
EDIT 2: Looks like Matumbi recorded their version of the Man in Me in 1976 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matumbi_(band) ), so the Clash's is most likely based on this and not Dylan's version.

Chord structure/theme similar to the song London Calling.msza wrote:11. Dead End Street

Strummer would add verses from the Toots song to some performances of Jail Guitar Doors.20. 54-46 (That's My Number)
Apparently a GEER outtake!25. Something In The Air
Re: Revolution Rock: Clash Jukebox
Thanks. I like the idea of Revolution Rock: Clash Jukebox, but it's a little too scattered for my liking, so I'm making a reggae only mix. Here it is, so far, in what I believe to be chronological order of when they were played.
1. Pressure Drop - Toots & the Maytals
2. Police and Thieves - Junior Murvin
3. Israelities - Desmond Dekker
4. Armagideon Time - Willie Williams
5. The Man in Me - Mutumbi
6. Stagger Lee - John Holt (this one is a bit of a stretch, I think)
7. Revolution Rock/Get Up - Danny Ray/Jackie Edwards
8. Johnny Too Bad - Slickers
9. Ride Your Donkey - the Tennors
10. Rudy, A Message to You - Dandy Livingston
11. Harder They Come - Jimmy Cliff
Not sure what I'm missing at this point. I might mix up the tracklist a bit to make a better balance between the major and minor hits. I'm really hoping to find a reggae Junco Partner.
I dont like the Ruler's version of Wrong Em Boyo, so that's cut. And I'm not too privy to any reggae covers Paul or Mick might have done post-Clash, but I would add those, too.

Police on my Back?
I understand they messed about with Bob Marley's Dancing Shoes pre-Police and Thieves.

Thanks, Dancin Shoes is a good one. I've only heard the original Police on my Back once, but remembered it sounding more like R&B.Silent Majority wrote:Police on my Back?

Re: Revolution Rock: Clash Jukebox
I was looking at this compilation on line and they have 2 versions.
One of them has only 21 tracks.
Was this reissued?

The shorter version has "I Can't Control Myself" by the Troggs on it - anyone know the significance of that?
Unless it's just a mistake, Play.com has a third version - same as the 21 track version except with Police On My Back added on to the end.

I bought the first incarnation (21 tracks) when it came out in 2006. So has it now been re-issued in expanded form. If so, I've seen nothing about it anywhere. Can someone enlighten me please.

I have the one released in '06, too...according to Amazon UK, it was reissued in '09, but it seems to have the same tracklisting.Rude Boy W10 wrote:I bought the first incarnation (21 tracks) when it came out in 2006. Yeah. I just checked Amazon UK. Exactly the same product. If anyones got any more info, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Re: Revolution Rock: Clash Jukebox
Two things I remembered and I hope they help...
October 2004 MOJO magazine puts out a disc called "Radio Clash - Music Handed Picked by Mick Jones & Paul Simonon"
track 13 is "Every Little Bit Hurts" (live) by The Spencer Davis Group.
I'm guessing this is the version that caught the band's attention not Brenda's
2nd thing and this is long before the board crashed, "Our Good Friend" Snoh use to put out compilation discs when the board membership got to milestone numbers.
He released one for 1600. "SF1600", It is a 3 disc set of reggae originals and Clash live versions. It even has the "BBC Beginner's Guide to Reggae with Mark Lamaar" on it with guest DJ Paul Simonon.
My problem is I don't know how to get these things uploaded for everyone to download.

Re: Revolution Rock: Clash Jukebox
I think Joe also does this in the studio version around the 2.30 mark but its really really faint.Silent Majority wrote:Strummer would add verses from the Toots song to some performances of Jail Guitar Doors.20. 54-46 (That's My Number)
