Strummservations
A Strummservation: The film version of "Minstrel Boy" kicks all sorts of ass.

I agree. I love the way he sings out some of the lyrics on that shorter version too. Very passionate, in my opinion. Much better than the lengthier one which has the humming and humble mumbling of some of the words from the song. The long version is still very touching and unique sounding though. I especially like the ending.

Love that version of that song. And I don't mean that to bag on the album version, but there's a chance that the soundtrack version of "Minstrel Boy" may be my favorite post-Clash Joe cut.

Strummservation: I take that back, the extended mix of "Boogie with Your Children" is my favorite post-Clash Joe cut. Finest thing he'd done since the AOR mix of "Fingerpoppin'"

Re: Strummservations
I made the strummservation recently that Joe, a man not known for his vocal range, stretches really far in this one. From a really low rumble to what has to be the upper range of his non-falsetto voice (on the "war is gone" part). Fairly impressive.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I miss Joe. We could have had three or four more Mescaleros albums by now.

Yeah. I've been on a serious Mescaleros kick lately. Not sure what sparked it, but I'm really missing him now.Jimmy Jazz wrote:I miss Joe. We could have had three or four more Mescaleros albums by now.

Damn, I miss him too. Three more albums would have been nice. And Hoy, you made some good points about Minstrel Boy.

Mondo Bongo is an awesome song. And it sounds amazing while driving on a deserted highway late at night.

The '88 Coasters, Edinburgh, Scotland Latino Rockabilly War gig (I mentioned the same show in a recent, I think) has got to be one of the best ones, mainly because of the diversity of the setlist. Keys to Your Heart, fully Joe sung Somebody Got Murdered, and Sightsee MC! all in one set. A true gem of a concert.

I love that Minstrel Boy too, but for me, the best post-Clash tune is Get Down Moses
Re: Strummservations
I saw the LRW gig at Glasgow Barrowlands a couple of nights earlier - Joe was on great form, he always loved playing Glasgow, even when he got arrestedChuck Mangione wrote:The '88 Coasters, Edinburgh, Scotland Latino Rockabilly War gig (I mentioned the same show in a recent, I think) has got to be one of the best ones, mainly because of the diversity of the setlist. I go on a Mescaleros kick a couple times a year. Those are legitimately underrated albums, and I don't say that as a Strummer fanboy. I don't know why Global A Go-Go didn't make any best of the year lists. And the live shows in 2001 and toward the end of 2002 were basically all dynamite. I think the Mescaleros sort of rendered a Clash comeback creatively irrelevant.
