Re: Unreleased Joe stuff
Obviously this is a term i just came up with as i felt it explained how i see the album.
Having ride your donkey as track title might have helped.
Basically in sport sometimes you hear the term he plays like a donkey would be used , Basically a slow moving plodder that is not particurly interesting compared to fast running stallion for instance. If you see a donkey run it looks like its struggling and not looking good at all in comparison.
If i was to think of a video representation for most of that album i would imagine joe on the back of a donkey in a large desert strumming away singing his songs plodding along with nothing much interesting going on.
So in my mind that term seemed to fit - maybe the unicorn pictures that are popular here may of sub consciously put that image in my mind as well but i have always felt this album has a spanish dusty desolate bar sort of feel which woiuld be empty of people and EW would be what was on the juke box as you arrived.
Maybe this was Joe trying to be a modern day Hoagey Carmichael ?

" I do remember there was an interview with Joe in one of the trade papers, maybe Sounds, just after the release and he was in good form. At the end the journalist asked him what he'd like people to say about EW and Strummer replied, "it's nae bad Jimmy." I don't ever remember Joe referring to himself as Jimmy in any sense or form so that's why that line always stuck with me,"
When I saw the Clash at the Lyceum in October 81, Joe walked on stage and his introduction was " Right, we're the Clash Jimmy!"
Joe's Scottish roots coming to the fore!

NoMoreHugh must be talking from a tunesmith standpoint - his melodies were never his strongest points. As a lyricist, he's got few in his class.Low Down Low wrote:NoMoreHugh wrote:
