Concert Vault Audio: Oct 28, 1982

I don't see this date on BMC or the Mega List. CV doesn't even know where the gig took place ("unknown" in URL), so the date is probably wrong.

It's Boston Orpheum. The Know Your Rights opens with Joe saying "it's quite nice to be in a human situation for a change." Is that September 8th? Another show that was recorded for radio/live.

That is the 7th, not 28th. Best circulating complete version (which isn't all that great) misses set closer Garageland.

The 8th has an FM radio master in private circulation straight from the radio station soundboard man--yes, confirmed master--that was the source of the previously available "Sony Listening Tape" sampler. Except full-show and in better quality. Unfortunately it's on do-not-distribute orders because the taper still works in the radio industry for the same conglomerate. However, that also misses set closer Garageland because tape runs out partway through STH. That final encore was not broadcast on the radio.

Now..."The Boston Tapes" sampler boot that's been around for 3-4 years does include "a" Garageland in A+ sound that came from some sort of master--possibly the culled-together FHTE sources pre- Bill Price. But it doesn't say which night Garageland is from. We've got one of them, but don't know which one.

So we either have a mash-up of sources, or one...possibly two...new sources. I've heard the 9/8 master (sorry...I gotta treat the DND request as sacred until told otherwise), and it would be awfully hard to improve on it unless you were Bill Price in Bill Price's studio. And since that was the broadcast master and WBCN did not broadcast the last encore because of the tape run-out on STH...this new one *might* be an audience source. But we don't have any audience sources for these '82 Orpheum gigs so that would constitute something new and value-added.

Where are they getting this stuff? Some radio station ownership chain dumping its concert archives? WBCN is now defunct because the owners switched it to Sports Talk, but who knows...the original Bonds broadcaster might be owned by the same company now and that's why we're seeing these rarities pop up all of a sudden.

That website has a ton of Clash stuff, including a shortened (8 song) playlist labelled as Boston Orpheum Sept 7, and the video of the Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ March 8 1980:

I downloaded a few of the gigs on that. The Orpheum shows are complete, and a lot better sound quality. Definite soundboard. I also downloaded the June 9th Bonds show. Similar to the full gig that everyone knows, but Micks vocals are bit louder. I'm really digging the Orpheum shows. I always felt that these later shows during the Terry tour were pretty good and its great to hear them in such great quality.

Hopefully an obvious point but if you've managed to download the Orpheum recordings and the bonds two can you upload them to mega nz or similar so we can download them{many thanks BB for the 8th but prefer without the remaster, way too much bass boost!] . I've paid a monthly membership to concert vault but frustratingly as there's 14 days free membership I can't download for 2 weeks! Also for some reason I can only stream some of the Clash recordings not the Orpheum ones! These are all too good to miss and may get taken down any day

In the spirit of this tomorrow I'll upload the Bristol 3rd August 1982 upgrade/complete gig I recently reviewed on blackmarketclash.com. Not a soundboard but vg audience and Mick's last UK Clash gig and including Strummer's only known tribute to Enid Blyton!

It's an embarrassment of riches but I'm wondering at this point why there are so many different mix versions of these radio recordings. I'll have to check the old Sony Listening Tapes cassettes to see, but it seems that the Bonds mix on the Vault is similar, where we've had others since that either bury Mick's vocal mic completely, like Chaos in NY, or feature him very loudly, like the Trick or Treat remixed Halloween broadcast.

Thanks, much appreciated.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Definitely a new source. Sounds like an unmixed SBD since it's a little flatter the FM broadcast master. Backing vox buried a bit and echoey, and there's some feedback coming off Terry's snare mic. Can hear Joe's playing a lot clearer and not cloaked as much in the clangy reverb that was so annoying through late-'82 (actually, his playing is pretty interesting). Whereas the 'BCN master misses the last 1-1/2 encores and has a cut in the middle of Bankrobber, but is gloriously full-mixed.

Either this was the pre-mixed source for the broadcast, some other rip off the SBD (band source for archival?...not that they were ever a band that remembered to tape their own shows). Or Door #3: who the hell knows where it came from or what its purpose was, but it's something that's never circulated before and this Vault site seems to be on a roll with somethings-never-circulated-before.

7th is definitely a raw SBD. Vox up-front and very clear (including Mick), instruments in the back and a little flat (though Paul's mercifully less farty than on the 8th). Mic problems from the 8th absent. Vox not up so far and instruments not back so far that would pass for a monitor mix, however. This is most definitely off the main board.

"Boston Tapes" are full-mixed and way better for the 9/7 tracks it samples, but this is far and away the best full-show one we've ever had of the 7th.

And which night is Police and Thieves from? It's not on either of these Vault tapes...

Edit: Never mind. It's just been misnamed as POMB.

8th. It's mis-titled on the download as POMB. Track 14...'second' POMB.
