Rat Patrol From Hell W10

Post by Marky Dread »

OK here's my version of "Rat Patrol" as I promised Kory. Heston mentioned he didn't have it in good quality so now you do. Overall I prefer "Rat Patrol" to "Combat Rock", the one thing the later got right is the track sequence pretty much. I didn't like Mick's proposed sequence that started off with "Straight to Hell" that just didn't work for me. I've cleaned up all the tracks to the best I can and made new artwork. Why the new title? A nod to both Mick and Joe and to help distinguish it from all the other versions out there. I think I've managed to round up virtually all the relevant tracks only the full 7 mins version of "Walk Evil Talk" is missing as the start of that track is damaged and I've gone for a 5 min edit and that should be enough for most.

Enjoy.

Yep please do mate. I did that first and I didn't like the flow of the album it feels too disjointed. Maybe that's just from years of listening to CR but hey each to their own. My sequence isn't a complete copy of CR.

I don't like it either, but it really contributes to the druggy paranoia that Mick may or may not have been going for, but which he was most assuredly feeling.

Huge thanks for this! Listening now, I love Should I Stay on the Rat Patrol mix. It sounds a lot more exciting than the album version which I never really cared for.

It's cool to have both sequences just to see the difference. "Combat Rock" works so much better for me. Glyn Johns may have turned "Rat Patrol" into a hit album but I think if Mick had, had his way then his idea of a double album would've sold just as good. To my mind the majority of his mixes needed no tampering with and just the tracks earmarked for the singles needed editing down to make them more radio friendly. The singles had different mixes anyhow so why not leave the longer Mick versions on the album? The only track that really benefits from Glyn John's work is "Know Your Rights". It would've been really nice if they had put Mick's stuff on 12''. I would've kept "First Night Back in London" on the album also as it works well and I think is underrated. I would've liked the idea of a 12'' of mixes with the album as Mick's "Overpowered By Funk" is great but the vocal mix works better as an album track.

"Car Jamming" has some of the best lyrics of any Clash record.

Actually the OBF on Mick's master reel, which follows the fifteen tracks meant for the album, is the vocal mix. Presumably he meant it for a B Side or 12". I like Mick's track order, but it's best seen as four album sides rather than a single CD. I like opening with Straight to Hell, as it's the best track on the record. It's a statement of intent, like London Calling or Mag 7, right into their version of Apocalypse Now. I also think that KYR is the biggest improvement in Glyn Johns' mix, though that's more a matter of production than mix. That song and SISOSIG have been reproduced in Combat Rock. It's ironic though that Rock the Casbah was the biggest single, as the track is so similar to Mick's mix and Clearmountain's remix was done with Mick as well.
