Wow! We are seriously lucky to have you! Thank you for your hard work. I started that "Fire and Skill" thread several weeks ago - but I've long since scrapped the idea. I've just been collecting Marky Dread Remasters - and they're adding up into a fine collection!

I finally listened to the Mick-less Paris show and found it very fascinating. The band sounded good - maybe a bit rusty - but there was still some fire in the tank. I like hearing the CtC tracks played without all of Bernie's studio gunk - there are some good songs to be had from that lot.

It makes me curious about where they would have gone had it not all fallen apart?

Great sound on the Espace remaster Marky, but by god, there's some horrible guitar on there. Not sure who is playing the solo on White Man and I Fought the Law, but it was abysmal.
Oof, just gave those a listen. I'd like to blame Vince, but who knows?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Yeah, I also just gave this one a spin. Some of the playing is rough. The guitar playing in general isn't great...but then you're going from Mick/Joe to Vince & Nick and Bernie just took these kids who had never played in a large venue and just chucked them out there. It was just a mess from beginning to end - poorly thought out and poorly carried out. I do think they got better as time went on - but it was just never going to work.

Vince is definitely a character. I've never had the chance to read his book. Is the story about him shagging Bernie's girlfriend in a parking lot true - or just a rock legend. I like to think it was true, ha ha!

I wasn't alive when the clash were a going concern,I think of these remasters as a bit of time capsules. They give me some insight into that era of time.Plus who doesn't love a good punk boot ? heathens I say.

Well don't forget Pete was already a Clash member while Mick was still in the band. Nick Sheppard had been the guitarist in punk band The Cortinas so the only real novice of sorts was Vince.

I guess if Bernie had not produced the album and say someone like Chris Thomas or Bill Price had done the job I guess we would all view things very differently. The songs were not the greatest but some decent tunes amongst CtC.

A bit scary but 36 years between end of WW2 and that show and 36 years between that show and now.

Thanks as always Marky, great stuff (apart from making me feel old!)
So that makes you 72 right? ;)
No, but I used to be! ;)

Right and it comes through in their playing. Vince cops to it as well in his book. Nick's playing and singing is generally tight as is Pete's. Vince is usually mixed really low, though he claims he did get some solos, usually the more languid (ie easy) solos. I think if the rhythm guitar is still prominent, chances are Vince is soloing. Haven't review it too much though.

His book is a good read but is definitely exaggerated.

I must catch up with these remasters, just trying to find the time. I know some people like FLAC but it is a bit of a pain in the arse for me, my converter takes ages. Definitely gonna make the effort though, can't beat the Marky magic dust.

Curious to know all of your thoughts on his claim that Paul only played bass on the first album. I know Norman Watt-Roy filled in at least on Sandinista - but thought that was a scheduling thing. Also - I believe Vince claims Paul's bass amp was always turned way down on stage.
