Robin Banks not a fan of Stay Free?

Post by rudebhoy »

on Ep 4 of the Spotify podcast, he tells the tale of Mick coming round to his room one night, Mick says "I've written a song about you" and pulls out an acoustic and starts playing it. Robin says he was embarrassed by it.

He then says "a lot of people love that song - I just wish I was one of them!'

It is a great song I agree. However If it was written about me I wouldn't feel that comfortable about it so I understand how Robin feels. It's a personal thing.

It’s probably pretty weird to be the object of what is clearly a platonic love song.

The thought of someone singing to me is actually my biggest nightmare. If RB felt the same way, that could have easily soured him on the song since that was his first introduction to it.

Seriously. If you want me to have a nervous breakdown, sing to me.

Even if it's Sammy Hagar singing "Just Can't Get Enough"?

I think I read Hagar is going on tour with Guy Fieri, I assume Mrs. B will be in attendance at the St. Louis fairgrounds for that tour.

I just imagined Guy Fieri saying “CABO WABO!” and almost fell over laughing.

Believe me, Robin Banks IS a fan of 'Stay Free'. For one thing, he loved his best friend Mick a lot more, and for a lot longer, than Mick loved him, though the two were connected at the hip in their school days and the beginning months of the Clash. At a certain point in 1977, Mick distanced himself somewhat from Robin, and found a new close friend in Tony James. He never abandoned Robin, though, and still hasn't as far as I know.

How do I know this? Because Robin was my boyfriend through most of 1978. We lived together and loved each other and were rarely apart. We both loved the Clash more than anything, so we spent our days talking about them, writing about them, and seeing as much of them as we could. Robin was a friend and confidante to all four boys in the band, who had a very small entourage. Robin was so instrumental in keeping the band happy, he was almost like a fifth member, in a way.

Robin and I were at most of the shows on the "Clash on Parole" Summer '78 tour. We were often backstage and helping out if we could. At night we sometimes bunked with them in their hotel rooms. During this time Mick was very sweet to us, but still maintained a certain distance from Robin, which I didn't understand until later.

At every gig, when Mick started "Stay Free" Robin would get very quiet and listen reverently to every word. He was into his own zone until Mick sang the final note. It was a nightly spiritual rite of passage for him, hearing his song. He loved every minute of it. Sometimes he got tears in his eyes.

I'm sure they love each other to this day, no matter what they act like, because what Robin and Mick shared together early on meant so much to each of them. It was their coming of age together.
