Clash City Showdown Revisited?

Post by Dr. Medulla »

So, I had an idea a bit after the fun of our survivor elimination game, given that people were enjoying dissecting the band and making dubious claims about, as usual, why various songs on Cut the Crap weren't sewer gas. Are people up for re-reading and discussing selected essays from CK's Clash City Showdown? Kind of like what academics occasionally do at conferences, roundtables devoted to classic books in the field. I've asked Chris about it and he's given his blessing—and maybe we can lure him into participation—so I'm curious whether people are up for this. If so, we can nominate particular pieces to yak about and maybe people could take turns "hosting" individual discussions.

Thoughts?

I remember years ago CK uploading a pdf, so that's an option for those without a paper copy.

Hello,

I'd enjoy reading others' takes on it. I'm not sure how much I'd contribute but seeing what people think is always good.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Great—looks like we've got a fair number on board. I don't know how organized people want to do this. Everything in this thread? Start new threads for particular essays or grouped essays that they want to talk about? My suggestion is that anyone who wants to start a discussion about an essay(s) just go ahead and do it, maybe summarizing what they think is notable and offering up some observations or questions to get things rolling. I've got a few other things occupying my attention, but I hope to chip in by Friday.

I’ll probably lurk around and read observations unless I get some ideas. Worth a reread, and I still have my copy.

I'm in. I still have my copy, and Chris' examination of the path the band were heading down with early versions of the CR material has always been interesting to me.
