Midnight to Stevens is a different mix on the original Clash on Broadway box set, compared to the Sound System set

First of all thank you for your observation. You already pointed this out to me, so I report my old answer, because in the meantime nothing has changed for me:
I have this song in three different Cds: Clash On Broadway (1991), Clash On Broadway (2000) and Sound System Box. The first two seem absolutely the same, the third one has a brighter sound but is basically the same version. I report in the alternate mix only the songs that have substantial differences either in the instruments or in the voice, such as in "Pressure Drop". If you've noticed something that I missed, please let me know. I love "Midnight To Stevens" and especially the great drumming by Topper Headon, precise and essential. :approve:

I've finally got round to comparing my COB box set (1991) and Sound System versions of Midnight to Stevens. And yes, you're quite right - definitely the same recording and mix.
I don't know where I got the impression it had been remixed for SS - I was sure when I first played it on the SS disc it sounded like a different version completely! And I know and love this track, it wasn't like I's only heard it once or twice (why it was banished to the vaults rather than being released at the time, in some form, is a mystery)
I think maybe the remastering threw me slightly, cos it does sound 'different' mastering compared to the CoB version. A bit fuller and more beefy on SS.
Apologies for the (un)cool confusion.

There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

I'm with you John, I thought it was a remix on Sound System but later realised it was just a good remastering job.
