Studio-only tracks / Live-only tracks

Post by JohnS »

Has there ever been a list drawn up of all the studio tracks which were never played live? (or at least, no live recordings circulate)
And all the songs played live which were never recorded officially? ie cover versions of fave songs, like Hit The Road Jack, BeBop A Lula, Fingernails, Blitzkrieg Bop.

I think all the 1st album stuff was played live; same with 'Rope'?
'London Calling' - did they ever play The Card Cheat, Lovers Rock, Four Horsemen? Revolution Rock?
'Sandinista' - not played: Hitsville UK. Lose This Skin? Any more? (disregarding the dub remix tracks)
'Combat Rock' - Overpowered by Funk, Red Angel Dragnet, Sean Flynn, Death Is A Star?

singles B-sides: 1-2 Crush On You, Gates of the West, Groovy Times, Radio One, Stop The World, Long Time Jerk, First Night Back in London, Cool Confusion

I think 4 Horsemen was play live at one of the secret London shows in the summer of 1979.
Overpowered by funk was played in the fall of 1981.

Only a few lines of Crooked Beat were jokenly sung at one show, iirc. Not really played live.

I think Revolution Rock had a few live airings as well.

Four Horsemen was played at Turku '79, I believe.

GEER: Was All the Young Punks ever played live? Maybe once or twice?
LC: they gave Right Profile a miss as well, I think.
S!: no Something About England, Rebel Waltz, Up in Heaven, Midnight Log, Kingston Advice (and spacier stuff like Equaliser, IMCT, etc)
CR: no RAD, Atom Tan, SF, DIAS

I’m more interested in the list of non recorded tracks played live?

Very early material like Mark Me Absent/How Can I Understand the Flies/etc and some '84 songs like Jericho are all that come to mind for originals. Anything else?

I was thinking covers as well plus where you can find them.
I remember a while back trying to track down a Pistols song they played live with Steve Jones.
Be good to have a definitive list of where they all are.

Marky's remaster of Mayfair Ballroom, Newcastle, 12th June 1980 has 'Revolution Rock' as the third song in the set, and the second of six in a row from 'London Calling' which was still a fairly new album and might be considered brave. That gig also has 'Hit The Road Jack/Police & Thieves', which I've always thought an unusual pairing, although they did the same with 'Blitzkreig Bop/Police & Thieves' which I think can be found on the 'Interviews' promo for 'On Broadway', but I don't think I have a copy to verify that.

1-2 Crush On You was played in Middlesbrough in 1978, maybe a few other gigs too.

Good suggestions, both.
Do we include 'Graffiti Rap' (Mogador Paris 1981)? Cos they recorded it as backing for Futura 2000's single

There is a list here though i doubt its definitive and a few of them very obviously mistiltled. Interesting that JJ tops the list for most played, being an early track obviously helps but I'd have guessed GoB with LC close second.
