Sandinista?
Sandinista?
How come Sandinista isn't revered like Exile on Main St. or Paul's Boutique?

It is in my house.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board
Re: Sandinista?
It's not as unequivocally good. There are some legit bad songs on it which you can't say about Exile or Paul's. I mean I love it as much as those two, but it's a warts and all kinda love.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Paul's Boutique > Sandinista! > Exile at Chez Flex. Exile runs out of steam a bit at the end, S! avoids that by the shittier tracks still being really weird and interesting for the most part.
Paul's Boutique is utterly unimpeachable though.* Not a bum note on the record. All time masterpiece.
*I used to prefer Check Your Head, which is more Sandinista-ish imho, but I've come around to Boutique being totally unassailable.

I don't disagree with that ranking, though I think Exile has a strongish ending with All Down the Line and Shine a Light on side 4 which I'm quite fond of. Side 3 is a bit weak and Soul Survivor is a bum track to end on.Flex wrote: ↑22 Apr 2020, 12:55pmPaul's Boutique > Sandinista! > Exile at Chez Flex. I had another friend that prefers CYH to PB which I never got. The lyrics and crazy samples speak to me way more than CYH's jammier tone.

I find Exile mostly boring. A few good tracks but undeserving of its status.

Yeah, side three is the weaker side with Exile for sure.
I really like the grooves and jams on CYH and I think it has some of my favorite rhymes of theirs. It's probably somewhat my mountain town influence showing, has sort of that good stoned apres ski vibe that you'd want. But PB is such a tight masterpiece, it's pretty hard to deny it's place on the throne.I had another friend that prefers CYH to PB which I never got. Re: Sandinista?
Sandinista! is such a broad musical exercise, covering so much ground, with plenty of ups and downs, for me its a really enthralling and exhausting ride, I love it. Paul's Boutique is brilliance throughout, I remember when it came out and I listened to it, I couldn't believe how incredible it was and how much I loved it. Exile just didn't do it for me for some reason, I never really got too into it.
From what I see there's still a little hope

Sandinista! Just is.

Curfews have been curbing
The end of liberty

For me, PB hit so immediately and perfectly that CYH felt like a letdown. I love CYH, but it took some warming in a way PB didn’t.Flex wrote: ↑22 Apr 2020, 1:47pmYeah, side three is the weaker side with Exile for sure.
