Hello Marky,

I'm here to say thanks again - probably not the last time but I've probably missed a few times I should have thanked you for your time and effort. You may be getting email from the head of the Department asking why my work has been so slow in getting done. I'd appreciate a few good words.

As I listen to these, I still find it remarkable at what the band had done at the time. What other band would dare attempt this?

This show has always been really interesting to me because of Allen Ginsberg's poem "Capital Air". As a college student, I've gotten really interested in politics and I tend to lean left on most things. I've done some research on Allen Ginsberg and he seems like a really interesting figure. I had a Creative Writing teacher last year who taught us about him and even had our class write our own poems in his style. He definitely had some extreme views, but I think he made some really valid points too. I was wondering what older Clash fans opinion of him is?

I’ve never been happy with the Clash association with Ginsberg and could never understand it. I don’t think he even adds any value not that that would make a difference.

in retrospect it's not an association you'd probably go for these days, but given joe's interests (in the beat culture) it makes sense. even being suspicious of right wing propaganda to try to discredit the counter-culture, he was pretty straightforwardly a pedophile which is grotesque, obviously. America is still a great poem (and he has a few others). I've probably been all over the map on this over the years on whether the ghost of allen gets canceled in my own intake of art, but right now I land on his presence being an interesting artifact of the time. Definitely on the deeply-fucked-up end of the spectrum in terms of people whose work I'll countenance, tho.
