Let's keep in mind that Peel was, by the standards of today, a pedophile.
Really? What's the story there? Which is to say, I wouldn't necessarily be surprised. The counterculture and sexual revolution of the late 60s and 70s broke so many taboos, some good (interracial relations) and some bad (adult-minor relations). It took time to sift thru matters and establish new norms. Which isn't about absolving people nonchalantly, only acknowledging historical context.

I'm not here to vilify a guy from the past, we're not looking a Jimmy Saville. I'm still listening to Jerry Lee, Led Zeppelin, Bowie and Tupac etc, but if Peel's going to get on a moral high horse against Joe Strummer - dead two decades with no skeletons falling out of a closet - I'm going to push back against him.
Yeah, it's a case of that time and that environment (rock scenes), it was entirely normal. Which, again, isn't to shrug it off or excuse it, but it's harder to understand it as deviancy within the context. But it does mean that those who, um, "participated" have lost a lot of their position to judge others.

Wow. That article is shocking. I had never heard anything about that. I'll take KYR and "sloganeering" any day over that creep's contributions to the world.

Not that I'm defending Peels actions.

Guy on Facebook says he has DAT tapes of the full gig that he mixed for Mick back in 2000. Tried to coax an upload out of him to no avail. Pics...

BTW, I friended this guy back in 2020 and he accepted my friend request about two months ago (4 years after the fact!). I messaged him again, hopefully politely, asking about the Lewisham tapes. It said he read it within a day but has yet to respond. I never had high hopes so it's only mildly disappointing.
Still no response. Sigh, my white whale remains elusive.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
