Bonds 40 Anniversary

Post by coffeepotman »

I wonder if there will be some type of 40th anniversary celebration regarding the Bonds 40th? There is some mention of it in the March Uncut magazine. It was quite a big deal in New York at the time.

A 'Best Of' from Marky's magnificent Bond remasters series might be the best we will get.

Probably won't happen because their catalogue has been pretty neglected so far.

I can't think of another band of their stature who are so ill-served by deluxe versions etc.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

I think The Don is going to be sitting on his footage for a lot more years to come

Don is not the obstacle here
The decision is in the hands of the band

That's what I was meaning. Not sure if there's the will to get it out there as much as we all want. Plus there will be a legal complications to it, there always seems to be. :meh:

I don't know about the legal stuff

What is real is that lot's of Clash footage from the band exist
And that's amazing they don't want to share this with the fans
there must be others reasons
May be some deal with Joe they don't want to forget ?
I don't know

But logically we should had new stuff for the 40th and sandinista but we only had a new vid (which is very nice)
it don't seems to be a teaser.
But with those guys we don't really know
they are punk !

Back in the day, I used to pester Don on Myspace about his footage. His responses were always just vague enough. For the Bonds stuff, he said something like it would come out "whenever they decide they want to do something with it." I assume "they" was the record company. I don't think it's fully in the hands of the band, because a decent amount of money is required to do the project.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Is Bernie involved in any of this?...if there is money is to be made, and if it's a lot maybe something will happen. The band are not getting any younger and they, like everyone else, are probably thinking about their retirement accounts and taking care of their children.

I think the band cut ties with Bernie years ago. The Clash are now essentially a company with Mick, Paul, Topper and Lucinda as partners. This will be to look after their interests as they still shift product and licence deals for anything from t-shirts to movie soundtracks etc. I don't think any of the band are going to go hungry anytime soon, and I doubt the Bonds footage would rectify that if they were.

I think they are cutting it a bit fine now!

A good time to listen to the Marky Dread remasters though.

I don’t understand it. This new Westway To The World which is supposed to be coming out this year (as per Don’s book) that the Mag 7 video was a precursor to - when is it supposed to happen if not now at the anniversary? The official website has released a new Bonds collection consisting of T-shirts and a poster. Where is the damn thing?
