Twenty one years after making Westway, Sony asked me to create a director's cut of the film, but I said that would short-change the fans and instead suggested using unheard stories from the original interviews with the band, to make a new film. I cut out the talking heads footage completely and used The Clash's testimony as voice-over for more visually powerful imagery. In the 2021 version of Westway to the World the viewers - many of whom I imagine were born long after the band split - will hear the voices of Joe, Mick, Paul and Topper while watching them at their physical and musical peak, doing what they did best: performing in front of live audiences and for the camera, or walking the streets of London and New York, soaking up the atmosphere and devouring cultural infuences in order to send them out to a wider audience. It's a different film, but the message remains the same and it's edited to be more appealing to a generation who've grown up with Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Bandcamp and Spotify. They need visual stimulation to catch their attention, and The Clash were always a great spectacle.

Westway to the World reboot coming in 2021?
From Don's new book...
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board
Re: Westway to the World reboot coming in 2021?
Cheers for that info Heston! Very promising. Any new Clash is welcome Clash.
I wonder, if this ties in with whatever TeddyB has cryptically hinted at on and off last year, it could be another big year for Clash fans... and we can party like it was 1999 all over again

That's what I was thinking. It may be a way of getting the Bonds (and other) footage out there.JohnS wrote: ↑20 Mar 2021, 8:59amCheers for that info Heston! Very promising. Any new Clash is welcome Clash.

If you had asked me 20 years ago, which year in the future could be deemed Year Of The Clash Revisited, i wouldn't have said 2021

If you had asked me on the street 'when did Westway come out?', I would have said 10 years ago not....21 years ago?!!
Hello? Go ahead, man. Yeah I'd just like to say, um, lets have some music now, huh? Ok, ok...thank you.
Re: Westway to the World reboot coming in 2021?
Would this be the Clash on Broadway film we were talking about? Sounds cool, but I still hope we get some form of Clash on Broadway.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

'99 wasn't It? Which puts the same time between now and then, as then and 1977.white man wrote: ↑21 Mar 2021, 4:53amI thought it was '97YoungParisians wrote: ↑20 Mar 2021, 3:03pmIf you had asked me on the street 'when did Westway come out?', I would have said 10 years ago not....21 years ago?!!

I'm pretty sure it debuted on the tv in late '99, video release was a bit later in 2000.white man wrote: ↑21 Mar 2021, 11:53amScary indeed. It is impossible that if
a) Footage of Bond have been found
b) Footage of Bond have been digitized
That the band do nothing
so reimagining westway with new unseen images will be welcome
That said i personally prefer not to expect anything from the group, I have been too disappointed in recent years

And according to Don's book the interviews were done in July 98. He talks of Mick hanging around after his interview to see Topper, and had to lend him his shirt as he had a t-shirt on full of cigarette burns. Amazing how he turned his life around.white man wrote: ↑21 Mar 2021, 2:55pmNever doubted it for one minuteHeston wrote: ↑21 Mar 2021, 12:23pmI'm pretty sure it debuted on the tv in late '99, video release was a bit later in 2000.

2 Oct 1999 - Westway shown on BBC
4 Oct 1999 - FHTE released
18 Oct 1999 - Rock Art & the x ray style released
Gone too senile to remember these things but that must have been a good two weeks to be a clash fan.
