No recordings with Mick in 83 have ever surfaced. I don't remember the details about a supposed recording of Bottom Line with Joe, perhaps others could fill in.
Trans Cash Free Pay One was based on the music that became BAD’s The Bottom Line. The TRAC version of Bottom Line had different music. Joe gave a copy of his and Mick’s demo of Trans Cash to Josh Cheuse, so it does exist. Never heard of anything else. The “New Orleans” influenced stuff Bernie had them trying was in rehearsal and didn’t get very far.
Very interesting. I reckon the Clash would have actually been great during the 80s if they stuck together. Mick Jones definitely grew in a whole new different direction as a songwriter.
But in the opposite direction to Strummer, though
Yes and no. I’ve made a playlist of the best songs on the Bad debut and cut the crap and it’s a surprisingly coherent synth punky type record.

Unfortunately, Pete Howard loses in either scenario

Yes, there is a theory that Bernie heard what BAD were up to and decided to give CTC an electro makeover. They aren't massively dissimilar, massed backing vocals aside.

Well the mastering is much better on BAD. CTC has this mid 80s VHS murkiness muddying the sound. Blame Bernie for that one I guess.

Imagine if CTC actually took off sales wise? The 1986 mega tour featuring Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, and the Clash. The Clash are now one of the biggest bands on the planet and regular staple on MTV, and the tabloid section. Strummer makes several cameos as an English druglord on Miami Vice. He subsequently develops a severe cocaine addiction, and by the early 90s has hit rock bottom. Kurt Cobain declares Joe Strummer as public enemy #1 of Grunge. “He is the bloated pig carcass of 80s corporate rock music.”Album Sales and concert attendance take a sharp decline. With no job, and Bernie Rhoades siphoning any remaining royalties from the Clash catalog, Joe turns to porn in order to make a living. During the day, he’s a flesh manakin. Making the Fingerpop’ right on time. By night, he prowls the streets of the sunset strip, snorting crushed up expired Quaaludes off of Brett Michaels’ asshole...

The Miami Vice cameo would have been great. He could have worn that white suit jacket he was wearing onstage in 1984.

I feel like if they had performed at live aid, something similar would have happened.... The mega tour part. Not so sure about the porno and cocaine part but I guess that’s cool too.

The drum machine programming is a lot more competent too with BAD.

As someone really into 80s synthesizers and drum machines, cut the crap is fascinating. I sometimes half wish they made an entire album like Dictator. Just an hour of non stop atonal synth punk free jazz. That seems common in a lot of film soundtracks at the time. Just slam your entire arm across the keyboard. Lol

I can totally get this viewpoint. Maybe without the terrace chants, but would we then consider that noise album to be a step in a way braver area? Perhaps we would respect it more (if not listen to it any more frequently) if it were fully adventurous rather than straddling that quasi-rock/funky vibe.

I believe the Manics used an Alesis SR-16. CTC is one of the Yamaha RX drum machines I believe?!?!?

Totally. And a salmon coloured shirt underneath. I can almost smell 1985.

Lol...true anarchy indeed! If Bernie's CTC vision was to be this apocalyptic audio assault or Blade Runner meets Mad Max synth punk, then cool idea. Maybe he thought his DIY approach to production would be authentically "punk"? But it still takes talent to produce good chaos versus crappy chaos. Mid-80s Negativland and Butthole Surfers made great tape experiments that sound like "hey, I can do that!" But it still takes talent. Bernie should have found the right experimental producer for the job.
