We were talking about this a few months ago probably being a product of board mixes and DI boxes, but I'm watching some older stuff and musing on it—a lot of his farty playing can be blamed on P Basses, I think. They're pretty farty anyway, and if Paul's action was lower, which it kind of sounds like from some of the fret rattle, that will be multiplied. If you listen to older stuff when he was still playing the Ricky, his tone is a lot rounder and smoother.
