The Drive was a (bandwagon jumping) punk band from Dundee who's one and only single was called "Jerkin'". I remember asking for it in a local record shop and the woman there said, "Jerkin? What, like a cardigan?" and that quickly became an adopted name among our group for wanking - having a cardy.

There was a struggle to find a way to express their sexuality away from the cock-rock posturing macho bullshit - which Lovers Rock is a reach toward. The Ramones reacted by singing about doe-eyed popsong love, the post-punk guys (which I ahistorically include Devo in) got into how weird and alienating the act was (like Gang of Four). It probably took until early goth that anyone could take a Prince like pleasure in bangin' as opposed to a folk-y based roistering rugby boy rollicking the likes that Steve Jones would have enjoyed.
